Why Lord Of The Rings’ Merry Actor Doesn’t Watch The Original Trilogy

Actor Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry in The Lord of The Rings, has said he doesn’t rewatch the film trilogy. Peter Jackson’s epic adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy novels first hit theaters in 2001 with The Fellowship Of The Ring. The films, each hitting a runtime of over three hours, were filmed back-to-back in a production process lasting over a year and released theatrically between 2001 and 2003. Hailed by fans and creating a new generation of Middle Earth enthusiasts, the Lord of The Rings movies made almost $3 billion at the gloabl box office. Nominated for 30 Oscars, the films won a combined 17 of the prestigious awards, and are seen by many as some of the greatest movies ever made.

Monaghan, who was known in Britain at the time for starring in BBC’s Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, was cast as Merry. A close friend of Elijah Wood’s Hobbit hero Frodo Baggins, Merry joins the adventuring fellowship alongside his best pal Pippin (Billy Boyd). Merry and Pippin became even more prominent in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, as they endured a journey of their own alongside the giant Ents. Monaghan’s role earned him instant notoriety to international audiences, and soon after the trilogy, the actor was cast as Charlie Pace on ABC’s mystery drama Lost. Another audience sensation, Charlie appeared on the series for over 70 episodes between 2006 and 2010. Monaghan continued his association with popular franchise media in recent years, with roles in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009 and Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker in 2019.

In an interview with Gamespot, Monaghan reflected on the trilogy that launched his career. Ahead of Fellowship of the Ring’s 20th anniversary, the actor admitted “I don’t think about it that much.” While he said he “loved” working on the movies, the actor also explained that it has “dictated huge parts of my life.” In a further admission, Monaghan revealed that he hasn’t watched the fantasy trilogy for roughly 15 years and doesn’t plan to again. Despite this, he maintained a positive outlook on the legacy of the series, which he says “stands the test of time.” See the full interview quote below:

“I don’t think about it that much. I don’t know how healthy it is for me to think about it or dwell on it that much … Obviously when I was working on the project I loved it, and I had the experience and the experience has obviously dictated huge parts of my life. But I’ve not seen Lord of the Rings for probably a good 15 years or so, and I’m not sure when I would or what the reason behind watching it would be … I’m obviously still great friends with a lot of the guys in it. It’s great. It’s great to do a film that I am proud of, that I think is great, that I think stands the test of time.”

The actor is soon to return to screens in R-rated action-thriller Waldo, starring Charlie Hunnam and Mel Gibson. The film, which has wrapped production, is directed by Don’t Forget The Driver’s Tim Kirkby. The Middle Earth stories are also set for a comeback, with Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series, which is set thousands of years before the original films. The big budget action-drama show has already planned several seasons, and filmed its first episodes in New Zealand (where the movies originally shot). The series is due to debut in September 2022.

Monaghan’s comments may be surprising to some diehard fans, who re-watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy regularly. However, considering the films dominated the actor’s life for over four years, it’s no surprise he may want to focus on the future instead. Monaghan was happy to recall all the friends and memories he made on the long production, and the real-life fellowship that was formed between actors Wood, Astin, Boyd and himself. Monaghan clearly remains thankful for the films that made him a globally recognised face. The actor did have a small cameo in one of The Hobbit prequel movies, so fans may hope to one day see Merry return to the Lord Of The Rings universe; perhaps a small part in the upcoming TV series.
