Why MCUs SpiderMan 3 Is Bringing Back Doctor Octopus & Electro

Why is the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 bringing back Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx’s Electro? 2019 was an explosive year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the Infinity Saga coming to a dramatic conclusion. But there’s been something of a drought of Marvel news through 2020, largely as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has disrupted both production and release schedules.

Fortunately that drought is coming to an end, with the imminent release of WandaVision in January 2021 and production either kicking off or restarting on a number of movies and Disney+ TV shows. One of the most exciting prospects is Spider-Man 3, the third film in the trilogy starring Tom Holland’s iteration of the wall-crawler, and which is hoped to feature the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as well. All evidence is that this will be a “Spider-Verse” movie, most likely inspired by the 2014 comic book event launched by legendary Spider-Man writer Dan Slott. Confirmed villains include Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Foxx’s Electro, with both actors reprising their roles from earlier Spider-Man film franchises. But why is Marvel bringing back both these bad guys?

It seems safe to assume Spider-Man 3 will embrace the Multiverse, and realistically Marvel want to make the most of that. Consequently, they don’t just want to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield; they also want supporting cast and even key enemies. Molina’s Doctor Octopus is still viewed as one of the best villains in the history of superhero movies, so it’s not surprising Marvel want to see Molina reprise the role. Foxx, in contrast, was never really given much of a chance to shine, and this is a chance to redeem his villain. What’s more, both of these villains are characters who could potentially have survived their apparent deaths, unlike various iterations of the Green Goblin or the Lizard. They both have Multiversal connections too – Doctor Octopus attempted to break spacetime in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, while Mike Costa and Robbie Thompson’s Web Warriors series saw Electro learn to travel the Multiverse in an energy form. So it all seems so very appropriate.

There is, of course, another reason; in the comics, Doctor Octopus and Electro are both members of a group of supervillains called the Sinister Six, who routinely menace Spider-Man. Sony has long been interested in bringing the Sinister Six to the big screen, and the MCU has apparently been taking steps towards that, introducing a number of key villains; the Vulture, the Shocker, Mysterio, and the Prowler. It’s true Mysterio is thought to be dead after Spider-Man: Far From Home, but he could well have faked his death. If that’s the case, then Doctor Octopus and Electro can actually round out the MCU’s Sinister Six.

Spider-Man films are always blockbusters, but Spider-Man 3 is becoming the most exciting to date, a celebration of the character’s big-screen history. The scale is greater than ever before, with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker – already no stranger to space – finding himself caught up in Multiversal affairs. What’s more, it remains to be seen how all of this will tie into Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teasing Spider-Man “happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes.”
