Why Modern Family Ended (& Where You Can Stream It)

It has been nearly a year since the last episode of Modern Family aired on April 8, 2020. Over seven million viewers watched the finale and saw the Dunphy-Pritchett family splinter off into all corners of the world. In light of the long-standing success of the show, the question remains why it ended in the first place. The short answer is that it was just time.

Modern Family is one of the most decorated sitcoms in television history. Raking in huge numbers for ABC over 250 episodes (and winning 22 Emmys along the way), the show was originally scheduled to end after Season 10, but was extended for another year. Since there were no specific reasons given, the general feeling seems to have been that the show had just run its course. So, after Season 11, the network pulled the plug for good – but they left the proverbial back door open for a spinoff.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, creators Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd explained that the ending was designed not to put an end to the individual characters, but merely to send them off into their own adventures. Lloyd said:

“The best endings are actually beginnings that don’t try to put a period on a series. To finish everybody with a great final line or we somehow tell the audience what is going to happen to them for the rest of their lives is a mistake. The series is going to live on, the characters are going to live on in the audience’s mind, so it may be best to set people off on new paths and then let the audience imagine them on those paths and almost let the series live on in each individual viewer’s mind.”

Rumors of a spinoff centering around Mitch and Cam rose a few months after the show’s last episode aired and were said to have support among ABC executives. In the same interview, Levitan explained, “There has been a little bit of talk among a couple of our writers that maybe there is an idea in there for something, but nothing solid has happened on that.” Indeed, the idea seems to have been floating around for the past year but no such spinoff has been confirmed.

The show used the mockumentary style popularized by another TV ratings hit, The Office. Unlike The Office, however, the documentary aspect was never acknowledged or incorporated into an actual storyline in Modern Family. In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lloyd explained that while it was “a valid idea,” he also felt that “it might’ve been too meta or too cute to maybe do that for us.” WandaVision recently paid homage to both shows by copying the mockumentary style for its seventh episode, a testament to how influential the two shows were.

Whether there will be an eventual spinoff or not remains to be seen. There have been no new developments in the past year, but the open-ended nature of the story allows room for continuation. In the final scene of the show, Phil and Claire leave the porch light on – a clear suggestion that, while the show has ended, the characters live on. In the meantime, fans will have to make do by re-watching 11 seasons of the hit show. Modern Family is available to stream on Peacock and Hulu.
