Why Mortal Kombat Changes Kanos Bionic Eye Origin

In addition to seemingly making him a good guy, Mortal Kombat 2021 also looks to be changing the origin story of Kano’s trusty bionic laser eye. The original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie is a favorite of many fans, and its portrayal of various classic characters ended up influencing how they were portrayed in subsequent games. This is very true of Kano, who was retconned into being Australian due to the popularity of late actor Trevor Goddard’s performance. Goddard was actually British, but used an Australian accent for multiple roles.

This change, along with a penchant for trash talk also lifted from Goddard’s Kano, served the character well as he continued his Mortal Kombat journey in the video game realm. Co-creator Ed Boon once said that Kano wasn’t playable in Mortal Kombat 2 due to his status as one of the least picked fighters in the first game, so it’s pretty cool that Kano has gone on to become one of the most recognizable and entertaining members of the cast.

Kano looks set to play a large role in Mortal Kombat 2021, as played by Australian actor Josh Lawson, and features prominently during the crowd-pleasing red band trailer for the film. However, while it’s not entirely spelled out, that trailer also appears to tease a change to how Kano got his bionic eye.

Why Mortal Kombat Changes Kano’s Bionic Eye Origin

In the original Mortal Kombat video game canon, Kano loses his eye after a battle with Jax, or more accurately a beatdown inflicted by him. Kano’s face is left busted up, leading to the bionic eye and plate being surgically created and inserted. However, the trailer for Mortal Kombat 2021 implies that this origin is set to change. Near the end, Kano is fighting with a creature resembling Reptile’s Saurian race, if not Reptile himself. The battle leaves him with slice wounds that exactly match the facial scarring seen on the bionic eye side of his face elsewhere in the trailer, and in promotional images.

Therefore, it would appear that this fight is what led to Kano’s eye replacement, this time with the metal plate grafted in under his skin. It remains to be seen if the new film will offer a plot reason as to why this change was made, but considering that Mortal Kombat 2021 is also changing the origin of Jax’s bionic arms, it’s quite possible the filmmakers are eager to subvert fan expectations. Kano also looks to have switched sides from his usual villainous role in the reboot, fighting alongside Raiden and Earth Realm. That change could also tie into why the backstory of his laser eye got altered, as if Kano will now fight alongside Jax, it wouldn’t really make sense to have the latter be responsible for destroying the former’s face.
