Why Netflix’s Umbrella Academy Makes Luther’s Transformation Even Worse

Each member of The Umbrella Academy has traits that define them, and in Luther’s case, it’s all based on his appearance, as he went through a major transformation when Reginald had to save his life – however, these changes are even worse in the series than they are in the comics. The popularity and success of the superhero genre have made way for darker and lesser-known stories to be adapted to the big screen and TV, and among those is The Umbrella Academy, a series of comic books created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá and which debuted on Netflix in February 2019.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven kids who, along with other 36 babies around the world, were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances. These seven kids were adopted by scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), and as they developed unique superpowers, Reginald trained them and formed The Umbrella Academy. However, Reginald wasn’t a good father, and the Hargreeves ended up parting ways and didn’t talk to each other for years, reuniting years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the fast-approaching apocalypse. The only one who continued being part of the team was Luther (Tom Hopper), who out of all the Hargreeves, had a somewhat stronger connection with Reginald, but not a good one.

Luther was the one Reginald named Number 1, and as such, he took the role of leader of the Umbrella Academy very seriously and was the only one who continued working with his father when the rest left. Unfortunately, one mission went terribly wrong and Luther was close to dying. To save him, Reginald injected him with a serum (believed to be the same he used on Pogo in the 1960s), but that turned Luther into a half-gorilla, half-human, also affecting his superstrength. This also impacted his relationship with Reginald, who sent him to the moon under the excuse of keeping an eye on potential threats, but he never read Luther’s reports. However, his transformation in the comics is completely different, making the one in the Netflix show worse.

In the comics, Luther was sent on a mission to Mars, but it didn’t go as expected and he was critically injured. Luther’s condition was so bad that Reginald was forced to perform experimental surgery to save him, and he ended up transplanting his head onto the body of a Martian Gorilla, thus giving him all the physical abilities of one and enhancing his superstrength (however, this also meant being attached to a life-support system). As seen above, in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, Luther didn’t need a body transplant, though he was severely injured, but the serum completely changed his torso, which obviously messed with him at a psychological level as well. While the transplant is also an extreme measure (though it can be debated if it was a good or bad move as it, ultimately, saved Luther’s life), Luther’s body changing so drastically without even needing it seems cruel and makes his arc even more tragic.

Even after all he has gone through, Luther continues to be the least favorite character among The Umbrella Academy viewers, though season 2 made him more likable. Perhaps seeing his story through this perspective of how drastic and unfair the changes in his body were can change the audience’s perception of Luther, and it’s to be seen if he will continue to improve in The Umbrella Academy season 3 and how the Sparrow Academy will treat him once they learn what happened to him.
