With the PlayStation 5 promised to arrive by this year’s holiday season, one of the top questions players have is whether the next-gen console will be compatible with the PS4’s controller. Sony recently unveiled a lot of information about the PlayStation 5’s peripherals, and unfortunately it doesn’t look like the PS5 will work with the DualShock controller.
Rather than giving an outright no, in a post made to the PlayStation blog Sony provided an answer as to why they did not design the new PlayStation 5 console to be compatible with the older model’s controller – and it has to do with protecting the gameplay experience.
The post explained that the PS5’s DualSense controller will contain new abilities and features to enhance gameplay, and therefore using the comparatively less-immersive DualShock would reduce a player’s experience. “We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller,” the Sony post read.
What’s Different About The PS5’s DualSense Controller?
Sony has confirmed the DualSense controller will launch with the PlayStation 5 later this year, though an official release date has not been given. The DualSense is aesthetically different from previous models of the DualShock, with a futuristic black-and-white design and boomerang-inspired shape. Aside from its physical appearance, the DualSense controller includes a number of new features that have never been available in previous PlayStation controllers.
The DualSense controller will have haptic feedback in lieu of the DualShock’s rumble feature, which made the controller vibrate during high-intensity moments in PS4 games. Haptic feedback, on the other hand, will make this technology more life-like, thereby improving the controller’s overall feedback and simulating the sensation of touch for the player, hence the controller’s name. The controller will also include adaptive triggers on the L2/R2 buttons, which will provide a feeling of resistance to once again replicate a more life-like sensation. Another aspect that has piqued curiosity is the ‘Create’ button, which will replace the ‘Share’ button previously featured in the PS4’s controller. The ‘Create’ button promises to provide new, more easily accessible ways for players to share and create content.
Smaller, but also new, features of the PS5’s controller include the incorporation of a built-in microphone, which will let gamers talk to other players online with more ease and without the need to use headphones that include a microphone. Sony has also confirmed the DualSense controller will feature an audio jack, so players can utilize their own headsets and headphones, should they choose to do so. So, even though the PlayStation 5 won’t be compatible with the PS4’s controller, this may be a good thing, as requiring players to use the new DualSense controller promises for a more immersive and enhanced playing experience.
