Why PlayStations Latest Acquisition Is Great News for Assassins Creed Fans

PlayStation Studios has acquired many other gaming studios over the decades, from Naughty Dog to Bungie. Its latest acquisition, Haven Studios, is another great addition that should bolster their roster of exclusive content. Barely over a year old, Haven Studios and its CEO, Jade Raymond, couldn’t be happier with being brought into the PlayStation fold.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Raymond said, “It’s testament to the talent, and the amazing relationship and trust we have between the team.” Raymond was the leader of the team that created the Assassin’s Creed series, working on four of the franchise’s titles. Fans of the Assassin’s Creed series should keep an eye on Raymond and Haven Studios; while they won’t necessarily be getting a new game in the series, with its creator at the helm of her own studio and the backing of Sony, another jaw-dropping franchise could be just around the corner.

Haven Studios was founded just about a year ago in March 2021. At the time, it announced PlayStation would be backing it in some way while working on a new game. Now, despite the lack of announcements regarding progress on the game in question, PlayStation Studios has announced the addition of Haven Studios to its family. “We’ve been very impressed with the progress that Haven has made,” wrote Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios. “It’s just easier for us to invest in the team and game more deeply this way… What Haven has made is so exciting for us, there was just a desire to deepen that relationship.”

Haven Studios’ credibility comes from their founder and CEO, Jade Raymond, who is an award-winning producer, director, and all-around trailblazer. With games like Star Wars: Battlefront II, Watch Dogs, and Far Cry 4 under her belt, Raymond is more than a veteran of the gaming industry. She’s worked for EA, Sony, and started Ubisoft Toronto. She was listed in Variety as one of the most influential business leaders shaping the global entertainment industry in 2018 and 2019, and she’s been awarded the Pioneer Award and Vanguard Award for her contributions to the industry.

Gamers should be optimistic about the upcoming project from Haven Studios based on its founder’s stellar track record. While the studio has yet to produce a game, the team that Raymond has brought together consists of developers, animators, designers, and programmers she’s worked with over the years that have stood out as exemplary in their field. It’s also a great sign that she will finally be able to release a game after years of ill-fated projects.

During her time at EA, Raymond was in charge of Visceral Games, the team working on a Star Wars game known only as Project Ragtag. However, despite its great potential, the game was canceled when the studio was shut down. More recently, Raymond worked with Google as head of Stadia Games and Entertainment, which was created to work on original and exclusive content for the cloud gaming service. In Feb. 2021, though, Google announced plans to scale back Stadia, shutting down Raymond’s division.

What little is known about Haven Studios’ game comes from Hulst’s description of Haven’s original pitch back in 2021, which involved creating a “modern multiplayer experience that brings gamers together in positive and meaningful ways.” PlayStation may currently be known for immersive, story-driven single-player games like God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us, but it is clearly making an effort to enter the live gaming scene. Haven isn’t the only studio PlayStation has snapped up recently, as it also acquired Bluepoint Games and Firesprite along with a host of others in 2021. PlayStation also grabbed attention earlier this year by acquiring Destiny 2 creator, Bungie.

“I have already seen the caliber of people Haven has been able to attract,” Hermen Hulst wrote in his post. Even gamers who aren’t fans of the Assassin’s Creed series or other games Raymond has worked on should be excited by the acquisition. Whatever Jade Raymond and her team are currently planning, it’s enough for PlayStation to want to snap up Haven Studios before anyone else can.
