Why Pokémons Infamous Cynthia Fight Will Be Different in BD & SP

Since Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl appear to be straight remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Cynthia will likely be the final opponent in the game. The battle against Cynthia will be different this time around, however, thanks to the addition of Fairy-type Pokémon.

Cynthia might be the most feared trainer in the history of Pokémon. Red’s team in Pokémon Gold and Silver might have higher levels, but they are all relatively easy to counter. Cynthia’s team has a great mixture of types and each one has a devastating move pool. There are few Pokémon that strike terror in the heart of players as much as Cynthia’s Garchomp, which entered battle in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl with Brick Break, Dragon Rush, Earthquake, and Giga Impact.

A lot has changed in the days since Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The battle system in the Pokémon series has changed dramatically, which means that the battle against Cynthia in Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon: Shining Pearl won’t play out in the same way that it did back in the ’00s.

Fairy-Type Pokémon Change Cynthia’s Battle Strategy

Dragon-type Pokémon received a hard counter in Pokémon X and Y when the Fairy-type was introduced to the series. Fairy-type Pokémon are immune to Dragon-type attacks and Dragon-type Pokémon are weak against Fairy-type moves. This changes the battle with Cynthia in a number of ways. Her Togekiss has now changed type, as Togekiss became Fairy/Flying in Pokémon X and Y. Not only has it become stronger, but it means Cynthia has an anti-dragon weapon of her own. Many players would bring a Dragon-type into the Cynthia battle, as a means of defeating her Garchomp, but this has now become a riskier option.

Cynthia’s infamous Garchomp has also become less of a threat. If a player brings a Galarian Weezing into the battle against Cynthia, then it becomes the perfect anti-Garchomp weapon, as it’s part Fairy-type and has the Levitate ability. This means that the Galarian Weezing is immune to Garchomp’s Dragon-type and Ground-type attacks, robbing it of its STAB bonus to hit.

Even if Galarian Weezing isn’t an option, then any Fairy-type Pokémon with strong offensive capabilities will be a major threat to Cynthia’s Garchomp. Cynthia will likely still be the toughest opponent in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but fans will have to change up their tactics, as the plan that worked on the Nintendo DS isn’t guaranteed to succeed on the Nintendo Switch.
