Why Resident Evil Villages Villagers Dont Have Accents

One of Resident Evil Village’s most interesting characters isn’t actually a character at all. The titular village and surrounding in-game areas are as alive as the game’s inhabitants and make for both a compelling and creepy setting for Capcom’s latest entry in the Resident Evil series. While there are many similarities between Village’s fictional location with the Eastern European country of Romania, there is one detail that doesn’t seem to add up – none of the villagers or villains of Resident Evil Village speak with an accent.

At the beginning of Resident Evil Village, the details of Mia and Ethan’s move to an unnamed Eastern European country are fairly glossed over. It is confirmed in the beginning conversation between Mia and Ethan that Chris Redfield’s plan after the events of RE7 involved their prompt relocation to Europe as well as military training for Ethan. There are some brief references to their new location as they share ciorbe de legume for dinner (Romanian sour soup), and the creepy story Mia reads being a “local tale;” a children’s book that actually overshadows general plot details of the game’s story.

At first glance, it seems Mia is eagerly adapting to local customs and cuisine, but as the events of Resident Evil Village unfold, that most certainly is not the case. In fact, after progressing through Village’s story it becomes apparent that there are quite a few easter eggs involving Mia and Mother Miranda that are tucked away within the short introduction section. Once Ethan is left stranded in the seemingly abandoned village, he encounters the few remaining villagers that have not yet been picked apart by bloodthirsty lycans. Interestingly, none of the villagers show any semblance of an Eastern European or Romanian accent, despite there being many cultural references to Romania in the game.

Resident Evil Village’s Characters Are Missing Accents

The currency in Village, called Lei, is actually the plural term for the Romanian currency, Leu. Resident Evil Village’s “Four Lords”, and even Mother Miranda herself, also fail to have any hint of an accent. This is somewhat peculiar, as all four villains and Mother Miranda originated from the village and surrounding areas, and have been co-existing together for almost a century. Even the designs for Castle Dimitrescu were inspired by real-life Romanian castle Peles Castle.

The decision to forgo any accents, Romanian or otherwise, and to not include spoken Romanian with English subtitles is an interesting choice from the perspective of game immersion. On one hand, including accents can deepen player immersion by making the mysterious and desolate Eastern European village more realistic. On the other hand, Resident Evil Village is intended for a large international player base, with players predominantly speaking English as their native language. Struggling to decipher key details through thick Romanian accents, or not being able to quickly read subtitles could cause players to miss out on plot details, so perhaps this is why accents are missing.

In a game with a setting that has so many parallels with a non-fictional country, Village’s lack of accents is odd. This even led to some confusion among players as to the correct pronunciation of Lady Dimitrescu’s name, as Dimitrescu is an actual Romanian last name that is pronounced differently than how it’s presented in Village. When contrasted to the use of Spanish and Spanish accents in Resident Evil 4, it is a bit jarring to hear these remote villagers speak perfect English with an American dialect. Luckily, small details such as this fail to have any major impact on the dreadful fun of Ethan Winters’ latest nightmare in Resident Evil Village.
