Why Sam Took Captain America’s Shield To Isaiah Bradley

Warning: SPOILERS for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Episode 5 – “Truth”, and Sam’s visit to Isaiah Bradley with the Captain America shield.

In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode 5, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) took Captain America’s shield to Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) in one of the most riveting scenes in the series. Sam told Isaiah that he needs to understand what happened to the super soldier who was erased from history, but he was also trying to reconcile his own decision about whether to finally accept the shield Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed to him and all of the baggage that comes with it.

Sam was shocked to find out Isaiah Bradley existed in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode 2. Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) brought Sam to meet Isaiah, who was the only survivor among a group of Black men who were given a variant of the Super-Soldier Serum in the 1950s. Bradley actually battled Barnes during the Korean War and he damaged the Winter Soldier’s metal arm. But Isaiah was betrayed by his own government, imprisoned for 30 years, and he was experimented on to determine why the serum worked on him. The truth about Isaiah Bradley was hidden and he was forgotten after being legally declared dead.

When Sam returned to Baltimore, he wanted to show Isaiah Captain America’s shield, which Wilson took from the failed Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell). At first, Wilson thought that they could shine a light on what happened to Bradley and tell his truth but Isaiah refused, fearing that the government would rather have him killed than have his story exposed. While Sam is right that the world of the 21st century is different and things have changed, Isaiah also has ample reasons to fear that it hasn’t changed enough. Isaiah Bradley then told Sam Wilson the harrowing story of when he rescued Black POWs and brought them home, only to be arrested and punished for it. It’s a twisted version of how Steve Rogers rescued the 107th Infantry, including Bucky, which legitimized Steve as a genuine hero in the eyes of the U.S. Army in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Sam tried to show Isaiah Captain America’s shield but Bradley outright refused because “those stars and stripes don’t mean nothing to me.” Moreso, after what the U.S. Government did to him, Isaiah can’t conceive that a Black man would ever be allowed to be Captain America, and he added that “no self-respecting Black man would want to be.” This made Sam’s decision as to whether to keep the shield even harder because it required a leap of faith that he’s right about the world really being different and that the U.S. Government would be willing to let a Black man be Captain America. Is Isaiah’s past also Sam Wilson’s prologue?

John Walker is proof that the U.S. Government has been chasing the “blond hair, blue eyes” prototype of Steve Rogers, but Walker was an abject failure as Cap because of the type of person he is. Sam took the shield to Isaiah Bradley to try to show him that things could be different – Captain America can be different – but Bradley understandably can’t see how. The only way to prove Isaiah is wrong is for Sam to accept the shield and its legacy, with all of the positive aspects and the dirty truth that comes along with it.

While nothing can right the terrible wrongs of Isaiah Bradley’s backstory, the best Sam could do for him is to possibly help restore Isaiah’s faith in his own country, and also set a positive example to Bradley’s grandson Eli (Elijah Richardson). If Sam becomes Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he can show that a Black man can succeed Steve Rogers and redefine what it means to be Captain America going forward.
