Why Scarlet Witchs Powers Dont Affect The Twins

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for WandaVision episode 5, “On A Very Special Episode.”

The most chilling aspect of WandaVision is how easily and completely Wanda controls the Westview residents – however, episode 5 may show that Wanda’s hold on Westview is beginning to slip. The most glaring example of this is her lack of control of her twin sons, Billy and Tommy.

Episode 5, “On a Very Special Episode…” starts with the twins as cranky babies fighting sleep. Wanda attempts to lull them to sleep the natural way, but she is unsuccessful. She tries to use her powers to put the boys to sleep, but that doesn’t work either. Throughout the episode, Billy and Tommy age themselves up at their own will — and Wanda seems incapable of stopping that, as well.

Every other resident of Westview appears to be human, which may explain why they are easily susceptible to Wanda’s control. Vision is an incredibly powerful being himself, which is likely why he has started to gain the ability to poke holes in Wanda’s facade. But Billy and Tommy are something else entirely. They are born of two powerful Avengers created from the Mind Stone. This in mind, it appears they were passed down powers that are enough to cancel out those of their mother.

Once she’s safely back on the outside of the hex, Monica confirms that everything inside Westview is real. People and objects are not objects of hallucination caused by Wanda, as S.W.O.R.D. operatives had previously believed. That includes Billy and Tommy. As Monica helped to deliver the babies, she has the first-hand experience to prove that Wanda’s sons are very real. Their organic arrival means that they are the sons of two beings with powers. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that the kids are super-powered themselves.

This is an ode to the original versions of the boys. Wanda and Vision really had powerful twins named Billy and Tommy in the comics. The kids each developed their own superpowers as well — Billy could harness magic like his mother, and Tommy was a speedster like his late Uncle Pietro. While episode 5 of WandaVision doesn’t show the boys harnessing these specific powers quite yet, it’s clear they do have some kind of powers. They’re still very young, so it’s likely that their powers are still developing.

Wanda’s inability to control Billy and Tommy reflects something much deeper than the trials and tribulations of motherhood. “On a Very Special Episode…” shows that Wanda’s perfect sitcom reality is starting to crumble. The WandaVision episode showed Agnes becoming independently self-aware, as she asks Wanda if she should re-do a line and catches on to references to Wanda’s powers. An outside email from S.W.O.R.D. also makes its way into the bubble and reaches every employee at Vision’s office. Not to mention, an alternate version of Pietro (Evan Peters) shows up on her doorstep without her conjuring him. Simply put, Wanda is starting to lose control in WandaVision, and that’s bound to have devastating consequences for both Westview and the outside world.
