Why Scorpion Appears To Cole Young In Mortal Kombats Trailer

The Mortal Kombat trailer includes a lot of story teases, including one curious shot where protagonist Cole Young (Lewis Tan) has a vision of Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada). Cole is a newcomer to the Mortal Kombat franchise, having never appeared in any of the video games, but his connection to the film’s other characters hasn’t been made fully clear yet. Ties to both Scorpion and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) have been alluded to, but the mystery likely won’t be fully solved until Mortal Kombat releases on April 16.

In the Mortal Kombat reboot trailer, Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) gives Cole a brief synopsis of the titular tournament, including a note that the dragon-shaped birthmark on his chest is the same as Sub-Zero’s. A known story reveal that Sub-Zero is hunting Cole at the beginning of the movie further hints at some secret connection between the two. It could be as simple as Shang Tsung – whom Sub-Zero is working for – wanting to eliminate possible competition before the tournament, but many fans have theorized Sub-Zero’s real interest in Cole is more complicated.

With Sub-Zero now Mortal Kombat’s main villain (according to director Simon McQuoid) and Scorpion cast as the more sympathetic character in their story, the most likely answer seems to be that Cole is a descendant of Scorpion (real name Hanzo Hasashi), who Sub-Zero is hunting as part of his broader vendetta against Scorpion. Sonya says the birthmark is an “invitation” to the Mortal Kombat tournament, so the fact that both Cole Young and Sub-Zero have it doesn’t necessarily imply any greater relationship.

On the other hand, Scorpion appears to Cole Young in a vision in the trailer, and it could be because they are bound by blood. Hanzo might be trying to warn Cole or simply make him aware of his heritage, and another scene in the trailer where Cole appears to fight alongside Scorpion in a battle against Sub-Zero seems to support that theory. Scorpion’s resurrection hasn’t yet been explained, and that could also be tied to his potential relationship with Cole.

Of course, there could be other reasons why Cole sees Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat trailer. It could still turn out that Cole is related to Sub-Zero instead – sparking Scorpion’s interest – or the vision could be related to some other piece of the tournament’s history, unrelated to the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Regardless, Cole Young is clearly an integral part of the two warriors’ ongoing feud, which looks to be one of the main narrative threads of the new Mortal Kombat.
