Why Spectre Is Still So important In No Time To Die (Despite Its Failure)

No Time to Die seems to be taking a lot of narrative cues from Spectre, despite the film’s lackluster reception. After years of rumors that Daniel Craig would be departing the role of James Bond, No Time to Die was confirmed to be his last outing as the iconic superspy, and it looks like the ending of his five-film tenure will be closely tied to the movies that preceded it, especially Spectre. But why maintain such a close connection to a film that was widely seen as a disappointment?

The nature of Spectre’s story makes it difficult to shake. In the film, it was revealed that many of the previous adventures of Craig’s Bond – including the events of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall – were all connected through SPECTRE, the evil global organization after which the film is named. Each of the prior entries’ villains ended up having ties to SPECTRE, and Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld revealed he had intentionally tormented Bond because of lingering jealousy from when they had been foster brothers.

The retcons in Spectre came fast and furious, and the odd way in which they hastily tied all the previous Craig films together has been a major point of criticism. However, because Spectre established such a large-scale, overarching continuity for Craig’s run as 007, it’s nearly impossible for No Time to Die not to contend with its events. Blofeld is too iconic a Bond villain, and SPECTRE is too big a piece of the plot for them not to be excised from Craig’s final 007 adventure.

As of now, it’s not entirely clear how big a role SPECTRE will play in No Time to Die, but given how much of an impact the organization has had on Bond through his life and Blofeld returning in a prominent role, it must be somewhat significant. The film doesn’t have to hold true to everything set up in Spectre, but it wouldn’t be smart to just ignore or retcon away what the movie did to the canon of Craig’s Bond era. Bond’s love interest Madeleine Swann’s past with SPECTRE is also integral to her story, with her father Mr. White having been a prominent member, and those ties look set to be explored further in the next movie.

In some ways, No Time to Die’s connections to Spectre could work out great. Waltz’s underwhelming Blofeld could be redeemed in a movie with a better script, and the new movie could make the numerous twists and revelations of Spectre more plausible through additional, more eloquent exposition. Either way, No Time to Die looks like it should be an exciting conclusion to Craig’s run as James Bond, and SPECTRE is an inescapable part of that story.
