Why Spider-Man: Miles Morales Doesn’t Let You Use Powers All The Time

Getting to be a superhero is the main draw of a game like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, so why can’t Miles use his powers at every point of the story?

Why SpiderMan Miles Morales Doesnt Let You Use Powers All The Time

Alongside the launch of the PlayStation 5, Insomniac Games released Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This was a follow-up to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, which quickly became the best selling PS4 exclusive of all time. This second installment promised players the chance to step into the suit of Miles Morales, traditionally known as the Brooklyn Spider from the Marvel comics, and a character that gained notoriety with the critically acclaimed 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. While Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a bit shorter than its predecessor, an abundance of features return from the first game, including a few sequences in which the player is unable to use their spider powers.

The playable sequences in question usually come during sections of the game that are glorified cutscenes focusing on world-building and narrative, or between major plot points when Miles takes a break from fighting crime to rest in his family’s Harlem apartment. Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game had quite a few of these that involved Peter Parker exploring Dr. Octavius’ lab, and stealth sections where Mary Jane was the playable character. While not an overt detriment to the game, many criticized Insomniac for taking the player away from Spider-Man and forcing them into slower-paced gameplay. Luckily Miles Morales avoids the walking section fatigue of the original and keeps these parts to a minimum.

So why can’t Miles use his powers during these occasional set pieces? Aside from the obvious answer (his identity is not hidden while out of his suit), there’s two main reasons. The first is that one of these powerless scenarios takes place in a flashback. Much of the main story involves Miles’ childhood best friend and science fair partner, Phin Mason. During an extended flashback sequence – years before Miles gets his powers – Miles and Phin explore the Oscorp Science Center where their project is being exhibited.

The second reason players have their powers stripped from them is because there are a handful of very short walking sections in Spider-Man: Miles Morales that come immediately before Miles suits up, or just after he has taken it off. To avoid the suspicions of his mother, Rio Morales, Miles hides his suit and gadgets in a backpack on the roof of his apartment building. Any time the story has Miles coming or going from his home, there is a short cutscene of him stashing his suit and using the fire escape outside of his bedroom window to enter and exit inconspicuously.

These cutscenes are often precluded or followed by opportunities for the player to explore Miles’ apartment and have conversations with other characters. Other examples of walking sections prior to Miles suiting up include exploring the crowd at a rally for Rio, who is running for city council, and infiltrating the home base of The Underground, a criminal organization being led by The Tinkerer.

For the most part, Miles Morales is a high-flying, web-swinging, bad-guy-beating adventure through Manhattan, but Insomniac Games has a story to tell about the newest Spider-Man in town. While gamers typically loathe mandatory walking sequences, they’re often a necessary middle ground between gameplay and cutscenes in order to provide some exposition. Luckily Spider-Man: Miles Morales keeps these sections to a minimum, and doesn’t rob players of their powers for more than a few minutes at a time.
