Why SpongeBob Movie Sponge On The Run Uses 3D Animation

SpongeBob and company are ready for a new adventure on the big screen with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which is the first SpongeBob SquarePants movie to use 3D animation in its entirety – but was there a reason for that change? Created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has been unstoppable ever since. The series is currently on its 12th season and is one of the longest-running American animated series.

As it happens with many successful animated shows, SpongeBob SquarePants has expanded to other media, such as comic books, video games, and even theme park rides and a theater musical, but it’s most remembered (aside from television, of course) for its movies. SpongeBob’s first big screen adventure arrived in 2004 and was simply titled The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and a second movie was released in 2015, titled The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Thankfully, it didn’t take another 10 years for Nickelodeon to bring a new SpongeBob SquarePants movie.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (originally titled The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge) has many particularities that set it apart from its predecessors. It serves as both a prequel and a continuation to the series as it will explore how SpongeBob, Gary, and Patrick met, and it’s also the first to be fully animated in stylized CG.

Why Nickelodeon Chose 3D Animation For Sponge On The Run

The first SpongeBob SquarePants movie was fully 2D animated, the same style as the TV show. The second movie mixed 2D animation with CGI, used in the scenes set in the surface, as SpongeBob and company travel there to confront the pirate Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas), who stole the Krusty Krab’s secret formula. While Sponge on the Run will have a couple of scenes set in the surface (Keanu Reeves’ character surely is out of the water), the creative team behind it chose to go full 3D animation with the movie, which gives the characters a more stylized look that still keeps its cartoon essence.

Sponge on the Run spent a long time in pre-production, and in 2015, creative supervisor Vincent Waller shared on Twitter that both 2D and CG animation were being considered for the movie, which was in its early stages of production at the time, but it was going to be mostly 2D as CG was (obviously) more expensive. In the end, the team went for a CG style for the whole movie, though the exact reason for that is unknown – but given that it’s the type of animation that has been embraced by all animation studios in the last years, and which has proven to be quite profitable, it’s not surprising that they decided to use it, even if it’s more expensive.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will see SpongeBob and Patrick going on a rescue mission to save Gary, who has been “snailnapped”. Their journey takes them to the Lost City of Atlantic City, where they will get slightly distracted with everything the shiny city has to offer. A 3D style brings new possibilities for the animators and for different visual jokes that would work differently in 2D animation, so it’s new and interesting territory for SpongeBob and friends to explore.
