Why Star Wars Fans Didnt Like Ahsoka Tano At First (& What Changed)

At the time of her introduction in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker’s padawan Ahsoka Tano was very much disliked by the general fanbase before becoming one of the most popular characters. Seen as young, naive, and generally annoying, Ahsoka began her Jedi training being viewed as the next Jar Jar Binks in terms of how obnoxious she was in her earliest depiction. However, something changed as the animated series went on, which lead to fans actually becoming upset with her series departure when she left the Jedi Order at the end of the fifth season. Ahsoka has since made return appearances in future seasons of Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, and even her recent live-action appearance in The Mandalorian, and they’ve all had massive fan support and love…so what changed?

When Ahsoka Tano made her debut in 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars film (which kick-started the animated series on Cartoon Network), she was essentially a surprise inclusion. Prior to that film, there had never been any indication that Anakin Skywalker had his own apprentice, and she certainly wasn’t seen in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith which marked the end of the Clone Wars. While she was hand-picked by Master Yoda to be a Padawan despite her youth, Ahsoka’s often bratty nature and ignorance was generally seen as off-putting by the large majority of fans. Likewise, the subsequent airing of the series would see many viewers bemoaning episodes that featured her and her generally naive and annoying personality, creating a distraction to the greater narrative being told.

However, something changed for Ahsoka by The Clone Wars’ third season: Ahsoka started growing up. She began to learn from her failures, and she gained more maturity and experience with the addition of more complex narrative arcs. Over time, she became a capable Jedi in her own right, having become a solid reflection of the best parts of Anakin Skywalker (including teachings the Jedi Order didn’t necessarily approve of). However, her time on the series culminated in her expulsion from the Jedi Order when she was framed for an attack on the Jedi Temple. Despite clearing her own name and being invited back, Ahsoka resolved to forge her own path at the end of the series’ fifth season. By this time, the fan love for Ahsoka was strong, and it was only made stronger when she made appearances in Star Wars: Rebels, revealing her assistance in forming the Rebel Alliance as a warrior in her prime, as well as her duel with her own former master who’d since become Darth Vader. She would also return in the final season of Clone Wars on Disney Plus, which saw great fan reception as she helped bring the Siege of Mandalore to close against Maul while Anakin began his descent into the dark side.

The great thing about Ahsoka is that George Lucas and Clone Wars writer/producer Dave Filoni were playing the long game. By debuting Ahsoka in her youth with a logically naive personality, they were then able to evolve her character as the series went on, allowing Star Wars fans to see her become who many now see as one of the best characters in the entire franchise. That sort of evolution doesn’t come without some incredibly intentional and dynamic writing, despite the poor reception she had right at the very beginning, culminating in her epic live-action debut in the second season of The Mandalorian.

It’s an incredible journey for a character who likewise became incredible, though it’s one that Lucasfilm could have easily abandoned or diminished due to Ahsoka’s initially poor reception. Now, Ahsoka Tano will soon be getting her own live-action series on Disney Plus, and Star Wars fans couldn’t be more excited. It’s amazing how far she’s come since that first chapter of The Clone Wars.
