Why Star Wars Fans Failed to Embrace Captain Phasma as the New Boba Fett

When Star Wars was set to return to the big screen with The Force Awakens, the hype surrounding the film was unlike anything that had come before. Fans expected to never see another Star Wars movie again, but many hoped that the new installment would be a return to form. And one piece of that was the mysterious figure in the promotional material known as Captain Phasma, who was expected to be the Boba Fett of the new trilogy. However, while she was set up for success, Phasma just never caught on like Boba did.

There was no subtly when it came to Disney’s inspiration for Captain Phasma. She was set up as an elite member of the First Order, bearing slick armor, a mysterious backstory and having little dialogue, just like Boba in the Original Trilogy. That meant, going into the trilogy, it seemed like fans Phasma and Boba Fett should’ve been enjoyed equally, but they ended up viewing the new character as wasted potential, unlike Boba, who remained popular enough to receive his own show.

Why Star Wars Fans Failed to Embrace Captain Phasma as the New Boba Fett

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back introduced Boba Fett as one of the several bounty hunters hired to track Han Solo. During his first scene, Vader has to tell Boba “No disintegrations,” which immediately paints a picture of the type of guy Boba is. He’s then the only person to successfully track the Millennium Falcon and eventually captures Han without ever firing a shot. And the character’s mysterious nature only fueled the hype surrounding him, as audiences could use their imaginations to fill in the blanks for how he became such an efficient bounty hunter.

However, his role in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was less well-regarded, as, while he was the first non-force user to give Luke Skywalker a hard time, he met an unflattering end as he fell screaming into the Sarlacc pit. But his ending wasn’t enough to put people off the character, as he still remained relevant in pop culture. Boba was still so popular, in fact, that all the years of theories about him still being alive in the pit came to fruition when he returned to live-action in The Mandalorian.

Just like Boba, Phasma starts off strong in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as she commands the attack on Jakku. And when Finn escapes from the First Order, Phasma is set up to be the one to track him down. But instead, she doesn’t appear until much later in the movie and is made to be a traitorous coward when she lowers the shields on Starkiller Base, which results in the destruction of the entire superweapon.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi then doubles down on her uselessness. While Phasma is the one to hand over Finn to the First Order, it’s actually a droid that discovers them. And even when she has her first fight in the entire trilogy, it ends up being her last because as she and Finn trade a few blows, she gets hit over the head and falls into a fiery pit.

While both Phasma and Boba (originally) met an underwhelming end, at least the bounty hunter had succeeded with everything up to that point. Some failure is fine, but Phasma fails to the point where her character is just viewed as pathetic, which ultimately makes her a forgettable figure in the Skywalker Saga.
