Why Supergirl Season 6 Avoids The Arrowverse Delay Problem

Supergirl may have avoided a major Arrowverse filming issue. In March 2020, Arrowverse shows like Supergirl, The Flash, and Batwoman were in the last leg of production of their 2019-2020 seasons. Then came an abrupt halt, as television productions around the world shut down due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Arrowverse shows were hard hit with several still needing to complete multiple episodes to bring their stories to a close. Producers, writers, and editors scrambled to present viable season finales to the network from the footage they had completed filming.

Batwoman had completed 19 of the 22 episodes of its premiere season when the production halt occurred. That team had to retool most of their plans – not only due to COVID, but also due to Ruby Rose’s departure and the hiring of Javicia Leslie as the new Batwoman. Returning to the air in February 2021, The Flash’s season 7 story plans have been put on hold, as they are using the first three episodes of the season to wrap up their season 6 storyline. The new Superman & Lois series similarly experienced a delayed start for production, resulting in anticipated scheduling setbacks, which mean the show will have an extended hiatus in spring 2021.

In 2020, Supergirl was the show closest to completing their season, with 21 of 22 planned season 5 episodes prepared. Staff, cast, and crew relayed on social media they were just a few days from completing that 22nd episode, and that series star, Melissa Benoist was filming her final scenes of the season when production was halted. Production resumed in October, with modified shooting schedules due to stringent COVID protocols. Again, cast and crew related that filming days were shorter, resulting in it taking longer to complete each episode. Benoist was still on maternity leave when production resumed, and the schedule allowed her to film her scenes to insert in the episodes when she returned to filming in January. Having to complete one episode before moving to the new season’s stories gives Supergirl a smoother transition into its new story arcs than some of the other Arrowverse shows.

Supergirl kicks off its sixth and final season on March 30, stepping into the Superman & Lois Tuesday timeslot for seven episodes. Unlike Flash and Batwoman, whose new seasons began with multiple episodes to wrap up old stories, necessitating fans go back and play catch up. Supergirl’s season premiere will have the Girl of Steel wrapping up the season 5 Lex Luthor and Leviathan conflict and reveal Brainiac 5’s fate then immediately move to its season 6 focus. Fans will delight in having to wait briefly for the resolution of season 5’s finale surprises and not having to watch multiple episodes to find out how the story ends.

The released first episode synopsis, “Rebirth” reveals the premiere involves the Supergirl team rushing to save Brainiac 5 who was near death after trapping Leviathan. Leviathan and Lex Luthor will be thwarted in a more permanent fashion, and presumably, Luthor will be shuffled out of the Big Bad spotlight to make way for season 7’s antagonists. By all accounts, the season 6 premiere will be one of the most intense, action-packed episodes of Supergirl. Supergirl’s final season premiere synopsis suggests a major event with serious ramifications. Per the synopsis of “Rebirth,” Supergirl will “sacrifice herself” to stop Lex Luthor. The implication is that whatever heroic act she performs will come at a steep personal cost. At least, Supergirl fans have a silver lining in that they won’t have to wait months or even multiple episodes to find out their heroine’s fate.
