Why Survivor Is Taking A Break From Returning Player Seasons

The much-anticipated Survivor 41 is set to usher in a new era of the long-running reality show, and it seems that new era won’t include returning players, at least not for a while. Survivor often brings back past contestants in returnee seasons. There have been five seasons comprised completely of returning all-stars, and several seasons that have had a mix of new players and Survivor veterans. Fans have come to expect that standout Survivor newbies will eventually be invited to play the game again.

Many players have played twice or three times, while some of the most legendary Survivor contestants have played four or five times. Survivor icons like two-time winner Sandra Diaz-Twine, Parvati Shallow, and Tyson Apostol have played on four separate seasons, while “Boston” Rob Mariano, who has played the game five times, holds the record for appearing on the most seasons. Boston Rob and Sandra also appeared on Survivor: Island of the Idols as mentors to the cast of players that season.

Now, however, it seems Survivor won’t be going back to the well of returning players any time soon. In an interview with Variety, host Jeff Probst revealed the show isn’t planning to bring back players from before season 41 in the foreseeable future. “For right now, where ‘Survivor’ needs to go is with fresh faces, fresh voices, players who are of the moment, players who can let us watch them and learn,” Probst explained. With Survivor 41, the show is entering a new age wherein the Survivor game will be more challenging to the players and will be more interactive for viewers. Part of that transition, for Probst, is highlighting new players and their stories rather than bringing back players familiar to the viewers. Probst wants this era to feel fresh and exciting and hopes that introducing new, interesting characters will help accomplish that.

It makes sense that Survivor isn’t planning a returnee season at the moment. The show’s most recent season, Survivor: Winners at War, was a returning player season featuring legendary Survivor winners duking it out for the prize money and title of Sole Survivor. However, Survivor has also built an impressive roster of potential returning players in recent seasons. Some of these players are potential fits for a “Second Chance” season, so it would be a shame if they miss out on an opportunity to return before newer players who fill similar archetypes are given priority to return due to recency bias.

Where Survivor goes in the near future is likely dependent on the success of Survivor 41. Resistance to change might be a hindrance to the season’s establishment of a new paradigm in the show’s history. If the past is any indication, though, it seems the producers know what they’re doing and are ready to take the show to exciting new heights.
