Why The Buster Sword Is A FF7 Remake Inconsistency Worth Explaining

The more content that’s released for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, the more inconsistencies are created regarding the Buster Sword. In the original FF7, the Buster Sword was Cloud’s starter weapon, but it went on to become one of the most iconic weapons in video game history thanks to spin-offs.

Most FF7 players dumped the Buster Sword as soon as something better came along, but it became closely tied to Cloud’s identity. The Buster Sword is Cloud’s default weapon in the Dissidia series, as well as the Super Smash Bros. series (except for his Advent Children costume). The version of Cloud from Kingdom Hearts uses a bandaged-up Buster Sword in battle, but he uses the regular version of the weapon in nearly all of his crossover appearances.

The FF7 spin-offs introduced an entire backstory for the Buster Sword. A great deal of significance was added to the weapon in FF7’s Crisis Core and Advent Children, which has caused continuity issues in the FF7 Remake series. In Crisis Core, it was established that the Buster Sword was a custom weapon that was purchased by Angeal Hewley’s father, as a gift for his entrance into SOLDIER. The weapon was so expensive that Angeal’s father went into debt to pay for it, and died while paying it off. Angeal passes the Buster Sword to Zack before he dies, who then passes it to Cloud during his last moments. It’s clear that the Buster Sword is a unique item, as no one else is seen using one throughout the original Compilation of FF7.

What FF7 Remake’s Wooden Buster Swords Could Mean

The ending of the FF7 Remake INTERmission DLC confirms that Zack is alive. The only problem is that both Cloud and Zack are seen with Buster Swords. This lends credence to the idea that this version of Zack comes from another timeline, and that the original Zack still perished while fighting the Shinra army.

The other inconsistency regarding the Buster Sword involves the kids in Sector 5. There are side quests in FF7 Remake that involve Cloud and Aerith interacting with kids in Sector 5, some of whom are seen sporting wooden replicas of the Buster Sword. It’s unclear who made these swords, but there are a few theories. Angeal had his own fan club in Crisis Core, so it’s possible that he was famous enough for kids to emulate him and build wooden replicas of his sword.

It’s also possible that Aerith made them as a tribute to Zack, as she spent time at the Leaf House. These wooden swords were seen as early as the first trailer for FF7 Remake at E3 2015, so it’s possible that the devs didn’t think too much about it, and just thought they were a cute reference. It’s possible that the Buster Sword isn’t as unique as Crisis Core made it out to be, and more versions of the weapon could pop up in later FF7 Remake games like Part 2.
