Why The Cats Didn’t Come Back To Life In Midnight Mass

Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass seemed to wrap up all the loose ends, but some viewers are still wondering why the cats the vampire feasted on didn’t come back to life. Midnight Mass, released in September of 2021, is widely considered to be one of Flanagan’s best Netflix horrors. It tells the story of a small fishing community isolated from the mainland on the island of Crockett. The show begins as one of the island’s former residents, Riley Finn (Zach Gilford), returns home after being released from prison, which coincides with the arrival of Father Paul (Hamish Linklater). Father Paul tells the town’s residents that he will be temporarily replacing their elderly priest Monsignor Pruitt who became ill during a trip to Jerusalem. Unbeknownst to the parish, the priest also brings along an “angel” to save them.

The cast of Midnight Mass is packed with Flanagan regulars, including wife Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, Henry Thomas, and Robert Longstreet, most of whom also appeared in Flanagan’s other limited Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. Hill House and Bly Manor are both paranormal stories about ghosts of the past occupying the large and looming houses where they died. Midnight Mass not only incorporates paranormal phenomena (vampires) but also supernatural concepts. These include the existence of God, the soul, and an afterlife beyond Earth.

The first sign that something is wrong on the island comes the morning after a storm. Riley walks to the beach where he finds dozens of dead cats lying in the sand. Fearing they were killed by disease, Riley and Sherrif Hassan (Rahul Kohli) attempt to keep everyone away from the shore. Upon closer inspection, they find that the cats’ necks are broken, and their blood has been drained. The cats were fed on by the “angel” Father Paul (actually Monsignor Pruitt) smuggled onto the island. Riley Finn and Monsignor Pruitt are also fed on by the “angel” and are resurrected as vampires after they die. In the show’s final episode, the parish members who die are also resurrected as vampires. This led audiences to question why the cats don’t come back to life too.

The caveat to becoming a vampire is that someone must consume vampire blood. The vampire Monsignor Pruitt believes is an angel feeds Riley and the Monsignor its blood after feeding on theirs. It is this transfer of blood, not being fed on, that converts Riley and Monsignor Pruitt. The rest of the parish who are converted are not fed on, except for Mildred (Alex Essoe) who the vampire attacks. Each of them still comes back to life because they drank vampire blood beforehand. While the blood slowly heals and de-ages the island residents who take communion, none of them are converted until their deaths, after which they are resurrected as vampires.

The two conditions necessary to come back to life in this modern vampire show are that a person drinks vampire blood and that they die, and it must happen in that order. Monsignor reveals that the blood must be consumed before death as he anguishes when Sarah (Annabeth Gish) refuses to drink his blood because if he gives it to her after death, she will not be resurrected. The characters also have to die after consuming vampire blood because, as seen with Mildred who takes communion daily, it doesn’t matter how much blood someone consumes, they do not become vampires until they have died. The cats don’t come back to life in Midnight Mass because the vampire wasn’t sharing its blood with them before killing them.
