Why The Halo Infinite Beta Is Missing Classic Multiplayer Features

The long-delayed, highly-anticipated Halo Infinite has been having multiplayer technical preview periods for quite some time now. Those able to participate are getting an early chance to play Infinite while developer 343 Industries irons out some of the game’s pre-launch wrinkles. Some longtime fans are noticing some changes to how the game plays in comparison to older Halo titles, however, with Infinite missing a couple of small gameplay mechanics: friendly fire and player collision.

The development for Halo Infinite has been noticeably rocky. 343i is attempting to bring the series forward with its first-ever free-to-play multiplayer, yet the game continues to have a host of issues even after its extended delay. Feedback from the community has led to some changes thus far, such as a reversion in how the in-game radar works, but the lack of player collision and friendly fire may be a consequence of Halo Infinite’s inclusion of multiplayer bots.

The AI opponents were primarily added to the game in order for players to hone their skills before entering matches against others. The Academy, as the training grounds mode is called in Infinite, lets players get a feel for the game and try out the different weapons against bots before jumping into an online match. Though unconfirmed, 343 Industries may have felt that the bots have the potential to get in the way of players, or even accidentally betray friendly players, with collision and friendly fire turned on. For now, this seems to be the most likely reason for Infinite not having the two features, which have been in every Halo until now.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Doesn’t Feel Right Without Collision & Friendly Fire

These may feel like minor details in the grand scheme of Halo Infinite’s gameplay, but noticeable changes like the removal of player collision and friendly fire are emblematic of the ongoing struggle Infinite has had in its development. 343 has the very tough task of trying to move the series forward, without compromising the beloved series’ identity and feel. The radar controversy in Halo Infinite is a good example of how the community wants the game to thoroughly feel like it belongs in the series. Phasing through other players and having no consequence for shooting teammates are small changes that go a long way in changing how Infinite feels.

Both features have been in Halo for a long time, and are parts of the game that players need to adjust for. Player collision may be obnoxious in preventing movement every once in a while, but players should always be mindful of their positioning and movement. Disabling friendly fire takes away a lot of risk in the game, like making players think before throwing a grenade near teammates, or more carefully lining up shots in SWAT so that a teammate isn’t hit instead. If the multiplayer bots are in fact the cause of these changes, 343 Industries should seriously consider whether or not their implementation is worth sacrificing the series’ well-established feeling to bring a new feature to Halo Infinite.
