Why The Mandalorian Removes His Helmet In Front Of Baby Yoda

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 4, “Chapter 12: The Siege.”

Din Djarin partially removes his helmet to eat in front of Baby Yoda in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 4, “Chapter 12: The Siege”, so why is he breaking such a key rule of his – and is it because of Bo-Katan Kryze? In The Mandalorian season 1, it was revealed that Mandos aren’t supposed to remove their helmets in front of another living being. Given that this had happened previously in Star Wars animated shows, it seemingly created something of a plot hole, but The Mandalorian season 2 has offered a fix.

In The Mandalorian season 2, episode 3, “Chapter 11: The Heiress”, Din encounters three new Mandalorians: Bo-Katan, Koska Reeves, and Axe Woves. Although they rescued him, Mando was aghast to learn that they willingly removed their helmets, declaring that they weren’t true Mandalorians. In response, Bo-Katan, who was born on Mandalore, revealed that Din was a child of the Watch, a hardline sect who believe in the Way of the Mandalore, and that other Mandalorians don’t follow this helmet rule.

It’s possible that this has had an impact on Din. Early on in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 4, Mando and Baby Yoda settle down on the Razor Crest to eat a bowl of soup and, aside from keeping The Child fed for all of three seconds, the scene is notable because of how Din eats in front of him. On two occasions he lifts up his helmet to chow down on some chowder, revealing the lower part of his face to the audience, and showing off his full appearance to Baby Yoda, who looks on in astonishment. Of course, it may be possible that Mando is simply relaxing his helmet rule in front of the Child – after all, it’s not like Baby Yoda can tell anyone what he really looks like. But Mando did form a connection with Bo-Katan, and that could be the reason for the switch.

Din was raised by the Death Watch, but it seems that while he was taught aspects of the Mandalorian code, he wasn’t clue in on every aspect of their culture, which is why Bo-Katan not only acts differently to him, but knows more than he does. Since Bo-Katan was quite clearly a true Mandalorian, then it would open Din’s eyes to the fact that his way is not the only way. That doesn’t mean he’ll change completely or no longer subscribe to the Way of the Mandalore, but it does raise the possibility of him being a little more relaxed with certain conventions in future, beginning with the helmet rule. After all, Mando’s got to eat, and he can’t just sit and starve until he gets complete privacy to do so every time.

Ultimately, the Mandalorian removing his helmet in “The Siege” works well on a few levels. Since he does it in front of Baby Yoda, then it shows the close relationship and complete trust that has developed between the pair. If it is indeed inspired by Bo-Katan, then that strengthens her connection to Din, which will be important for when she presumably returns later in The Mandalorian season 2. And, perhaps most crucially of all, this can allow the show to build towards Mando removing his helmet more often. Pedro Pascal is a well-known, talented actor who is currently hidden by the helmet, so finding a way for The Mandalorian to actually show off more of its star isn’t a bad idea.
