Why The MCU Could Have Two Versions Of Nova

The MCU may get not one, but two different versions of the Human Rocket if Marvel makes a Nova movie. Reportedly, Nova is one of a handful of projects that Marvel is planning on putting into production in 2023. If this report is accurate, audiences could see Nova flying onto the big screen as early as 2024.

The presumption surrounding a possible Nova movie in MCU Phase 5 is that it would center on Richard Rider, the original Nova and the most well-known incarnation of the character. In the comics, Richard Rider was a teenager randomly chosen to be the Nova-Prime. After receiving all sorts of new powers and responsibilities, Nova emerged as one of the most important heroes in the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. A fairly recent addition to Marvel’s library of characters – Sam Alexander – developed a fanbase of his own when he succeeded Rider as Nova in 2011. When Rider returned, Marvel began utilizing both its two Novas in stories.

While Richard Rider’s enduring popularity and comic history certainly make him the strongest candidate to be Nova’s main protagonist, he may not be alone in using the codename. In January 2021, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige teased that Richard Rider and Sam Alexander would be Nova in the MCU. It’s possible that this speaks to a long-term plan where both characters can be Nova at one point or another. Both got their powers as teenagers, but most of Rider’s adventures were as an adult, whereas Alexander is typically depicted as a kid in his early teens. It may be that Marvel may have Rider pass the baton to Alexander after a few MCU outings.

Or, it could be a sign that the first movie will somehow include the two Novas together. After all, the comics have shown that it’s not impossible for Rider and Alexander to share the Nova name. The problem though, is that telling both heroes’ origins in one movie feels a bit unlikely for Marvel’s Nova plan. Instead, it may introduce Sam Alexander as a supporting character for Richard Rider. He could be a younger child that meets Rider at school or elsewhere in the story. Instead of making Alexander a second Nova in the first movie, it could provide hints or some sort of setup for his MCU future. He could always acquire his powers in a sequel after Marvel has already fully fleshed out Rider’s origin.

As for what use Marvel could have for two Novas, the MCU could have separate roles for each character. Similar to the comics, Marvel could keep Alexander on Earth and align with him a teenage superhero team like MCU’s Young Avengers or the Champions. Meanwhile, Nova’s Richard Rider could be traveling around in space as a member of the next Guardians of the Galaxy team or taking part in cosmic crossovers.
