Why The Morning Show Killed Off Mitch & What It Means For The Future

The Morning Show killed off Steve Carell’s Mitch Kessler and, with his death, the future looks very different for the hit show. Apple TV+’s flagship TV show has earned the streamer a slew of awards since its premiere, including Apple TV+’s first Primetime Emmy, and is led by an all-star ensemble cast. Carell, however, will no longer be among them and the fallout will be exceptional.

The Morning Show centers on the staff of a fictional morning news station as they suffer the fallout of a massive sexual misconduct scandal involving its veteran male co-anchor, Mitch Kessler. At the end of The Morning Show season 1, the young woman Mitch assaulted, Hannah (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), commits suicide and The Morning Show season 2 begins with the news station, UBA, at the center of a wrongful death suit and Mitch living a solitary existence in Italy. Unable to escape his notoriety as a dangerous predator, Mitch Kessler gets accosted at a café in Lake Como, and an Italian woman, Paola (Valeria Golino), defends him. Paola and Mitch become friends and Mitch begins to heal through his relationship with her.

In the episodes leading up to Mitch’s death, Mitch learns to trust Paola and the two establish a healthy intimacy. Mitch continues to be haunted by his past and the public’s view of him, however, and, after a car nearly runs him off the road, he lifts his hands from his steering wheel and lets his car careen off a cliff in The Morning Show season 2, episode 7, “La Amara Vita.” Here’s why Mitch Kessler was killed off and all the ways his death may affect The Morning Show moving forward.

Why Mitch Kessler Was Killed Off

Why The Morning Show Killed Off Mitch & What It Means For The Future

Steve Carell’s Mitch Kessler has been a major character in The Morning Show since the show’s premiere. His arc from egomaniacal, chauvinistic superstar to social pariah making him one of the most compelling characters, if not the most compelling, on the show. But Showrunner Kerry Ehrin revealed that Mitch’s character arc and death were planned from the beginning (via The Hollywood Reporter):

“I thought it would be interesting to have him acknowledge [what he’d done] and let it into his body and brain, and have to live with it. And really not be able to escape from it. That was a certain type of torture, and I thought that was an interesting thing to witness. The challenge of it was to not dip into sympathy. To not be like, ‘Oh, poor Mitch.’ We never exonerated him. We never say this shouldn’t have happened to him.”

Alex’s End Is Coming

Why The Morning Show Killed Off Mitch & What It Means For The Future

Arriving back in the U.S. after visiting Mitch in Italy, Alex Levy (played by Friends actress Jennifer Aniston) is devastated by the news of his death and, in a single episode, several of Alex’s outstanding storylines are tied up. First, Alex has been continually abusive to Chip (Mark Duplass) since the show’s outset and Alex’s disappearance is his final straw. He leaves her a voicemail while she is in flight confessing all the things he’s never said, and when she returns from Italy and checks her phone, they are finally honest with each other in a vicious back-and-forth verbal assault. Next, when Alex breaks the news of Mitch’s death to Mitch’s ex-wife, Paige (Embeth Davidtz), Alex discovers that Paige has known of Alex and Mitch’s sexual relationship all along and Paige calls out her duplicitousness. Finally, though The Morning Show executives want Alex to break the news of Mitch’s death on air, Alex finally validates Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon, coincidentally Aniston’s sister in Friends) by telling her she should break the news because she is the face of the new era of The Morning Show.

This all comes after Alex’s intensely emotional trip to Italy in which Alex is able to finally communicate her love and anger toward Mitch, subjects she has been struggling with since the beginning of the show. Alex calls her daughter while in Italy to tell her about Maggie Brenner’s (Marcia Gay Harden) exposé in an attempt to heal their relationship, which has been broken since Alex’s divorce. All of this points to Alex Levy’s time on The Morning Show soon coming to an end as well.

Mia Will Make A Move

Why The Morning Show Killed Off Mitch & What It Means For The Future

Yellowstone actress Karen Pittman plays Mia, another character who seems to be nearing the end of her arc. In The Morning Show season 2, Mia takes Chip’s job as head producer; however, she cannot escape her reputation as Mitch’s ex. Mia was not assaulted by Mitch; she had a consensual affair with him and loved him before it ended. She now has the job she has always wanted and is good at it but is constantly judged for her relationship with Mitch. It would make sense for Mia to get offered another job and make the move, leaving The Morning Show. An interesting turn of events would be to see Mia move to rival station YDA and continue on the show in a new facet.

Paola Will Finally Tell Mitch’s Story, And Others

Why The Morning Show Killed Off Mitch & What It Means For The Future

Paola is the only one to see Mitch for who he has become instead of who he was. The Morning Show season 2 has seen Paola play a key role in Mitch’s redemption story, acting as his solitary human connection after his exile to Italy and bringing him back to his humanity. An aspiring documentarian, Paola practice interviews Mitch and does not delete the interview when he asks her to. She is the only one that can truly deliver Mitch’s side of the story following his death. In the forthcoming episodes, she may release the interview, fulfilling Mitch’s wish for the world to hear his side of the story. Conversely, she may not release the interview out of respect for his final wishes.

Paola overheard the conversation between Mitch and Alex when Alex came to Italy and knows that Alex asked Mitch to lie about their sexual history. Paola may go public with the information or, in a far more interesting turn, the information may surface while Paola is being interviewed by The Morning Show’s Bradley Jackson. Bradley is known for investigative journalism and has wanted to return to her roots after the glossy morning show content. It may be that Bradley seeks Paola out to uncover what really happened to Mitch, bringing Paola to New York to be interviewed on The Morning Show.

Chip Will Continue To Be His Own Worst Enemy

Continually stressed and abused in his role as producer through The Morning Show season 1, Chip found a far better work-life balance after being fired. When Alex shows up offering him a return to The Morning Show as her personal producer in The Morning Show season 2, however, Chip accepts and returns for more abuse and unhappiness. While it would be fulfilling to see Chip return to his fiancé and embrace his life without The Morning Show, it seems more likely that Chip will be unable to leave his life at The Morning Show and will remain, possibly taking Mia’s position following her resignation.

With the end of Mitch’s arc, The Morning Show has concluded its most interesting story. As The Morning Show heads into the pandemic, it is unclear how a show that focuses on the daily business of a news station will continue through months of working from home in quarantine. Regardless, an immense shift is coming to The Morning Show in the wake of Mitch Kessler’s death.
