Why the New Resident Evil Game Could Be Outbreak 3

With Resident Evil being one of Capcom’s biggest franchises, it’s no surprise that the company has tried its hand at numerous spinoff games in the past. Not all of these spinoffs have been successful, and in fact, some of them have been outright critically panned. However, one Resident Evil spinoff series did prove quite popular. Released in the early 2000s, Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 earned decent review scores and had some good ideas that resonated with fans, but Capcom hasn’t released a new entry in the Outbreak sub series in 15 years.

However, it looks like fans holding out hope for a new Resident Evil Outbreak game may finally get their wish, as it looks like a Resident Evil Outbreak File #3 reveal could be right around the corner.

What is Resident Evil Outbreak?

Why the New Resident Evil Game Could Be Outbreak 3

The Resident Evil Outbreak games retained the same basic survival-horror gameplay as the main Resident Evil games, but with some big twists. The most notable change was the shift to online multiplayer gameplay, with players selecting from a variety of characters with their own unique abilities before trying to survive the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. However, since the Resident Evil Outbreak games released on the PS2, it’s safe to say that the vast majority of players didn’t even get to enjoy their online capabilities, as online wasn’t widely embraced until the following generation of consoles.

With today’s online features and modern consoles, Capcom could really deliver on Resident Evil Outbreak’s promise of online multiplayer, and do it much better this time around.

Project Resistance

Why the New Resident Evil Game Could Be Outbreak 3

It was revealed that Capcom was inviting those in the Resident Evil Ambassadors program to play an unannounced Resident Evil game. Since then, Capcom has given the new Resident Evil game the working title of Project Resistance, and promises to reveal more at the Tokyo Game Show on September 9. There isn’t much known about Project Resistance in an official capacity, but the fact that Capcom had those in the Ambassadors program test the game together seems to suggest it will support online multiplayer and co-op functionality.

There have been other Resident Evil games that have dabbled with online multiplayer in the past, like with the universally disliked Operation Raccoon City, so the likely inclusion of multiplayer is not enough to determine that Project Resistance is really Outbreak 3. However, there is additional evidence that points in that direction.

Leaked Images

Shortly after Capcom confirmed Project Resistance, images of the game were leaked online. The Project Resistance leaked images feature a variety of different characters, none of whom have been in a Resident Evil game before. Since the Outbreak games featured multiple distinct characters for players to choose from, it’s quite possible that the characters seen in these images are the new playable characters for Project Resistance.

Website Change

The official website for Resident Evil Outbreak now just goes to a mostly blank page with the word “OK” in the corner. While this might not mean anything, it’s worth pointing out that the Resident Evil 2 website looked the same ahead of the Resident Evil 2 remake reveal. It’s possible that Capcom is preparing to completely redesign the Resident Evil Outbreak website as well once the game is officially announced, assuming that Project Resistance is in fact a new Outbreak game as speculated.

What About Single Player Resident Evil Games?

While some fans may be disappointed if Project Resistance does turn out to be a multiplayer-centric Resident Evil Outbreak game, that doesn’t mean that Capcom is putting off development on more traditional Resident Evil experiences. Considering the incredible success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom is almost certainly moving forward with single player Resident Evil projects as well.

As for what those unannounced Resident Evil games could be, there are two strong possibilities. For one, it’s quite likely that Capcom is pursuing a Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake, as it would be able to reuse assets from the Resident Evil 2 remake and potentially cut down on development costs. Secondly, we already know that Resident Evil 8 is in development in some capacity, and the rumors point to it being similar to Resident Evil 7 from a gameplay standpoint.

While we don’t know when Capcom may reveal the rumored Resident Evil 3 remake or Resident Evil 8, fans can at least look forward to the unveiling of Project Resistance come September 9.
