Why The Next Halloween Movie Should Be A Prequel (Set Before The 1978 Original)

The years that Michael Myers spent in Smith’s Grove with Dr. Loomis have still not been seen onscreen, something a Halloween prequel is perfect for.

Why The Next Halloween Movie Should Be A Prequel (Set Before The 1978 Original)

Halloween Ends is unlikely (despite its title) to bring the slasher saga to a close for good, so the next Halloween movie after the trilogy wraps up should be a prequel set before the events of the original 1978 movie. It is unlikely that horror legend John Carpenter and influential co-writer/producer Debra Hill knew the effect they would have on horror when the duo began work on The Babysitter Murders. The project, a horror that depicted a string of teens being offed one by one by a silent killer, soon became known as Halloween, one of the most influential slasher movies in the history of the sub-genre.

Halloween’s body count may not be the highest of any slasher franchise, but the 1978 movie did provide the blueprint for slasher cinema going forward. The mute, masked murderous madman, the group of interchangeable teen victims, the final girl who (comparatively) abstains from sex and drugs as her doomed friends indulge their vices. Halloween would go on to influence not only the massively popular Friday the 13th and Nightmare On Elm Street franchises but also the next generation of meta-slashers from 1996’s Scream onwards.

The Halloween franchise soon proved as un-killable as its antagonist Michael Myers, gaining a string of sequels, a ‘00s remake (with its own sequel), and now a rebooted trilogy. This rebooted trilogy will soon wrap up with the one-two punch of the upcoming Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, but it is hard to believe that these will be the true end of the franchise. The success of director David Gordon Green’s trilogy has renewed public interest in the movies and, instead of creating more sequels, the next movie should be a prequel set before Carpenter’s 1978 movie. The franchise has never delved into the period when Dr. Loomis was studying Michael Myers in Smith’s Grove, and this could make for a compelling horror story.

The Halloween spinoff comic Halloween #1 (Phil Nutman, Daniel Farrands, and David Brewer, Chaos Comics) proves that this portion of Michael and Loomis’ long history together could be compelling without costing Myers his all-important mystique. Many fans hated the fact that director Rob Zombie’s divisive remake dwelled on the slasher’s backstory and even made Michael Myers speak, as the franchise faithful felt this robbed the character of his status as an unknowable enigma. The source of Michael’s terrifying evil was always assumed to be something more unpredictable than the history of abuse in his home that Zombie’s movies depict, which is where a new spinoff could copy the prequel comics to ensure the character stays true to himself.

The prequel comic sees Loomis driven to madness by the wordless Michael while never divulging any evidence as to why Myers lost his mind or what is wrong with him. The doctor eventually concedes that Michael is simply utterly irredeemably evil, but not before a few patients and even Loomis’ love interest lose their lives to the young Michael. It is a disturbing backstory that keeps Michael’s secrets secret, and if the franchise does not make its next outing a Halloween 3: Season of the Witch-style standalone horror story, a Halloween movie detailing this sordid past could be a stellar prequel for the franchise.
