Why The Vampire Diaries Killed Off Vicki Donovan

Here’s why The Vampire Diaries killed off Vicki Donovan (Kayla Ewell) in season 1. The supernatural series was one of The CW’s most consistently popular programs. Thanks to Netflix, the show has maintained its cult status, and viewers continue to hold out hope that the cast will reunite for The Vampire Diaries season 9. Fans grew emotionally invested in the lives of The Vampire Diaries cast of characters, leading to two spin-offs, The Originals and Legacies. During its first season, the show shocked viewers when it killed off series regular Vicki Donovan.

Vicki Donovan, Mystic Falls resident bad girl and Matt Donovan’s (Zach Roerig) older sister, was at the epicenter of the show’s first love triangle. Vicki was romantically involved with both Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) and Elena Gilbert’s (Nina Dobrev) younger brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). While Elena was being swept off her feet by the brooding and mysterious Stefan Salvatore, Vicki was targeted and brutally attacked by his older brother Damon both in the pilot and again in episode 5, “You’re Undead to Me.” Vicki became the first main character in the series to transition into a vampire when she was sired by Damon during episode 6, “Lost Girls.” Vicki’s newfound bloodlust and killer instinct led to her demise when she was staked by Stefan in episode 7, “Haunted.”

With Vicki proving to be such an integral part of several ongoing storylines early in the series, why was she killed off? Show co-creator Kevin Williamson told MTV in 2009, “I don’t want to be that show where there’s no jeopardy. [Some shows] are all very predictable in the sense that, well, ‘We know this is the lead character, so we know he won’t die.'” It appears Vicki was always fated to be a “sacrificial lamb” to instill in the audience the understanding that in a town teeming with supernatural monsters, nobody was guaranteed safety. “I want the show to have an unpredictable quality to it, and I think that’s going to come now, and the audience will realize I will kill them — we will kill the main characters,” Williamson said. Williamson and co-creator Julie Plec made good on the threat throughout The Vampire Diaries’ eight-season run. Elena’s Aunt Jenna, Alaric Saltzman’s wife Josette Laughlin, Enzo St. John, Tyler Lockwood, and Stefan all met unexpected and heartbreaking ends. Every season amassed a body count, although many characters were resurrected in one form or another, including Vicki, who appeared as a ghost in seasons 2, 3, and 5, and as a Spirit of Hell in season 8.

Ewell exited the series early, but one scene she shared with Ian Somerhalder’s Vampire Diaries character Damon ranks as both actors’ favorite. In 2014, Somerhalder told E! News, “My favorite scene was Damon turning Vicki into a vampire, and they’re dancing all around. It’s also never bad having Kayla Ewell in her underwear.” During a recent interview with Tommy DiDario on Instagram while promoting her and former Vampire Diaries co-star Candice King’s (Caroline Forbes) podcast, Ewell said of Damon and Vicki’s macabre dance party, ” … Even while shooting it, I remember thinking ‘Wow. I think this is a really special moment here. Not just for my life personally, but for the show.'”

Ewell also acknowledged that Vicki wasn’t a very likable character despite her tragic fate and that fans still don’t have much love for the eldest Donovan sibling. “… I totally get it because I think she was really lost and wildly misunderstood and not very nice. She wasn’t a very good person, a very good character,” Ewell said. However, when DiDario questioned if Ewell would accept an invitation to reprise her role as Vicki, Ewell said yes. So both Vicki fans and haters shouldn’t assume that even though Vicki’s story ended on The Vampire Diaries with her finding peace with Tyler (Trevino’s character exited after season 6 only to return and be murdered by Damon during season 8), she won’t pay a visit to Mystic Falls in the future.
