The creator of Undertale has revealed why the game has received a higher age rating on Xbox systems, as it has a hidden casino minigame that features simulated gambling. Undertale is now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S systems, despite being released in 2015.

The people who have somehow missed out on Undertale after all of these years can also check it out on Xbox Game Pass. Undertale might have inspired enough creepy fanart to give Sonic the Hedgehog a run for his money, but the game is relatively tame in terms of its own content. Undertale is rated 10+ by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) which is the rating committee for video games in the US. According to the ESRB, the reason for this rating is due to fantasy violence, mild blood, mild language, and the use of tobacco.

The console ports of Undetale added new content to the game, and the Xbox versions are no exception. The Xbox versions of Undertale add a new shrine beneath the sink in Papyrus and Sans’ house, and this is what’s causing problems.

According to Toby Fox on Twitter, the exclusive area in the Xbox versions of the game contains a slot machine. This gives the player the chance to unlock new decorations for the casino, including a poker table, with Sans acting as the dealer. The problem with the slot machine is that it adds an element of simulated gambling to the game, which automatically bumped the rating up to T. It’s currently unclear as of the time of writing whether other new content has made its way into the Xbox port, outside of a single shrine.

This isn’t the first time that an older game has retroactively gained a new age rating in the jump between consoles. Pokémon Red and Blue had their age rating increased to 12 in Europe when they were released on the Nintendo 3DS. The reason for this was due to the Game Corner, as this also featured a slot machine that could be used to win prizes. The European rating boards are stricter when it comes to depictions of gambling in games meant for kids. The Pokémon franchise eventually lost access to all of its slot machines, and now all of the Game Corners are gone. The hidden casino in Undertale is played for laughs, but its presence still caused a rating bump.
