Why Vader Wanted Luke As An Apprentice Before Knowing His Identity
Darth Vader didn’t just want Luke Skywalker because he was his son – he dreamed of turning him to the dark side before he ever knew that!

Surprisingly, Star Wars comics have revealed Darth Vader wanted to train Luke Skywalker before he even learned his true identity. The son of the Chosen One, Luke Skywalker inherited his father’s power – and with it his galactic significance. In the end, it was Luke’s strength of character rather than his Jedi mastery that saved the galaxy from Palpatine, when he insisted on believing even Darth Vader could be redeemed.
Darth Vader, of course, had other plans for Luke. He hunted for Luke across the galaxy, killing Luke Skywalker imposters, eager to find his son and bring him to the dark side. The Dark Lord of the Sith confronted Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, revealing his true identity in the hopes the personal connection would cause Luke to despair. But it seems he had the idea of training Luke as his apprentice long before that – even before he learned Luke’s true identity.
Jason Aaron and John Cassaday’s Star Wars run, which launched back in 2015, featured the first face-to-face encounter between Darth Vader and the Rebel pilot who destroyed the Death Star. Darth Vader rightly deduces that Obi-Wan Kenobi trained Luke, but is appalled to realize how little the boy knows – with Luke even taken aback when Darth Vader snatches his lightsaber away from him with the Force. Still, over the course of the first three issues Darth Vader begins to develop a sense of respect for Luke – and ultimately resolves to turn him to the dark side, largely because he is eager to get revenge on Obi-Wan.
The interesting question is whether Darth Vader envisions Luke as one of his Inquisitors, almost all of whom are former Jedi, or as an actual Sith Apprentice. The scene seems to suggest the latter, with Darth Vader dreaming of corrupting the last hope of the Jedi and turning Luke into his own weapon – just as Palpatine had corrupted the Chosen One, who the Jedi believed was destined to destroy the Sith. As Darth Sidious’ apprentice, Vader was encouraged to be ambitious; indeed, such ambition lay at the core of the Rule of Two, which specifies there must always be an apprentice and a master – “one to crave power, and the other to wield it.”
It’s certainly amusing to realize how quickly Darth Vader began to covet Luke Skywalker’s power – even before he learned the youth was actually his own son. Perhaps the Dark Lord of the Sith already sensed the subtle prompting of the Force, drawing the two ever closer together. If so, he had no idea where it would go, for the Star Wars story ultimately became one of redemption rather than one of unending corruption.
