Why WWE Released Karrion Kross & Scarlett (What Comes Next)

Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux were just two of many WWE Superstars released from the company in November—here’s why they were cut, and what’s next for the real-life wrestling couple. Kross signed with WWE in February 2020, and found quick success on the NXT brand, becoming a two-time champion. Unfortunately, an untimely injury brought his title reign to a premature end, while a combination of bad decision-making, an overtly awful presentation, and a lack of creative vision ensured that his time on WWE Monday Night Raw was an uphill battle from the start.

Kross (Kevin Kesar) has been wrestling since 2015, first gaining notoriety in Lucha Underground while wrestling in Mexico for AAA. Some of his best work came alongside his fiancé Scarlett (Elizabeth Chihaia)—who has primarily worked as a manager, while wrestling on occasion for companies like AAA, Stardom, and Chicago-based independent promotion AAW. Both stars competed for IMPACT Wrestling in 2018 and 2019, and while they largely performed independent of one another while there, both were utilized consistently and Kross was on track to be a major singles star for the promotion at one point, prior to their very public, somewhat controversial departure.

News broke on November 4 that Karrion Kross—formerly Killer Kross—and Scarlett Bordeaux had been released from their contracts with WWE, in addition to more than a dozen other names including Keith Lee, Mia Yim, the Lucha House Party and former NXT Women’s Champion Ember Moon. While the couple being among this crop of WWE releases isn’t exactly a surprise given recent trends, not long ago it was widely believed that the combination of their intense visual presentation and Kross’ herculean strength would make for a perfect marriage with WWE’s traditionally over-the-top production. Unfortunately, WWE largely dropped the ball.

Why WWE Released Karrion Kross & Scarlett (What Comes Next)

Kross’ issues started not long after arriving in WWE, but were not all within the wrestler’s realm of control. With Scarlett at his side, Kross debuted with a shocking 6-minute victory over established brand favorite and notable badass Tommaso Ciampa. He then defeated Keith Lee—another name released by WWE in November—just two months later to win the NXT Championship. The next day, however, it was announced that Kross had sustained a separated shoulder in the match, and was forced to vacate the title just 24 hours after winning it. Upon returning, Kross regained the championship with relative ease, but once again struggled to find consistency and stable ground, as WWE hastily made the call to move him to the WWE Monday Night Raw brand. Kross was booked to drop the title to Samoa Joe at NXT TakeOver 36 after just 136 days.

Their “main roster” transition was marred by backlash from the start. For some inexplicable reason, WWE decided to prematurely bring Kross to Raw while he still held the NXT Championship, and in an even more mind-boggling move had the up-and-coming titan lose to 44-year-old Jeff Hardy in less than 2 minutes. With fans already upset by WWE’s handling of the Karrion Kross character, and Scarlett nowhere to be seen after the move to Raw, the company decided to double down on the controversy by strapping Kross with a hideous costume—somewhere between an old school gladiator and a leather bondage suit. The new look was widely mocked by fans, and certainly did nothing to help their situation. Kross has not wrestled on television since the September 27 edition of Monday Night Raw, where he defeated Jaxson Ryker in under 2 minutes.

What’s next for the two wrestlers after being fired by WWE remains to be seen, but there are several interesting possibilities on the table. While their messy departure from IMPACT makes a return there unlikely without first mending fences, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has risen up as a legitimate competitor since the two signed with WWE, and beIN Sports’ Major League Wrestling might be a perfect place for Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux to showcase their particular brand of elegance and brutality with a promotion on the rise. The two could also return to Mexico, tour internationally once the post-COVID landscape allows them to do so, or even explore their opportunities outside of the wrestling business. Whatever comes next, it’s unlikely we’ll see the two drastically mismanaged Superstars in WWE again soon.
