Apple just awarded $45 million to Corning Incorporated, indicating that Ceramic Shield on future iPhones could get a lot better than it currently is. This money comes from Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund, which was created in 2017 to “support world-class innovation and high-skilled manufacturing jobs across the U.S.”
The iPhone 12 introduced a number of new features, one of which is Ceramic Shield. Ceramic Shield is the name of the glass that covers the iPhone 12’s display, with Apple claiming that it’s “tougher than any smartphone glass.” It’s made out of nano-ceramic crystals, has 4x stronger drop protection compared to the iPhone 11, and was made in partnership with Corning — the company behind the vast majority of glass used on modern smartphones.
Ceramic Shield has proven to be an interesting addition to the iPhone, and looking ahead, it now stands to get even better with future generations. On May 10, Apple announced that it had awarded $45 million to Corning as part of its Advanced Manufacturing Fund. In a press release announcing the news, Apple says the money will “expand Corning’s manufacturing capacity in the U.S. and drive research and development into innovative new technologies that support durability and long-lasting product life, building on both Apple and Corning’s deep commitment to protecting the environment.” Corning has previously received over $450 million from the Advanced Manufacturing Fund, with this latest award further helping the company develop better glass products for future Apple devices.
What This Means For Glass On Future Apple Products
While Apple nor Corning have revealed details on what the next generation of Ceramic Shield will look like, one can only speculate that this additional funding will be used to improve the technology going forward. $45 million is a lot of extra money that Corning can now use to make iPhone displays even stronger, with those improvements taking the current foundation of Ceramic Shield and making it better than ever.
One thing that Apple and Corning could address with Ceramic Shield 2 is scratch resistance. Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 12 was very much focused on improving drop protection, and while it certainly succeeds in that regard, it didn’t do much for reducing scratches on the display. If Apple and Corning are able to retain Ceramic Shield’s excellent drop protection while offering noticeable improvements to how it handles scratches, that would be a huge win for future iPhones.
Not only that, but this money will go towards improving Apple products beyond the iPhone. Corning also manufactures the glass that’s used on the iPad and Apple Watch, meaning part of that $45 million can be used to improve the glass experience there as well. Ceramic Shield isn’t currently available on the iPad or Apple Watch, but with this additional funding, that could be an area Corning is able to explore now. The specifics of future Corning developments will be revealed in due time, but for now, the main takeaway is that Corning has a lot more money to keep making Apple gadgets more durable.
