Why Zelda Probably Won’t Be Playable In Breath Of The Wild 2

The new Breath of the Wild 2 trailer was stunning. However, it appears to discourage the widely-held hope for a playable Zelda. Probably.

When Zelda was just as prominent as Link in the 2019 trailer for Breath of the Wild 2, many got their hopes up that, finally, she might become a playable character. But, alas, for all the magic and wonder supplied by the new Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 trailer, the one downside seems to be the development of reasonable doubt for a playable Zelda.

The reason for this doubt is quite simple: in the first twenty seconds of the teaser, Zelda falls shown a dark, abyssal chasm. And Link, in the next shot, almost appears to fall down after her. Granted, he’s in different clothes and has eschewed his hair-tie to let his lustrous locks run freely, but Nintendo seems to want the viewer to gain the impression that Link is chasing after Zelda. Zelda isn’t even seen again for the remainder of the trailer.

A playable Zelda in a mainline game has been a major wishlist item for series fans for ages. The only mainline Legend of Zelda game Zelda’s playable in is Spirit Tracks, but even then, she’s only a disembodied spirit who can possess enemy Phantoms. Other than fighting games like the Hyrule Warriors games and Super Smash Bros., the only other games with a playable Zelda are in two CD-i games likely best left forgotten.

A Playable Zelda In Breath Of The Wild Is Still Possible

Previously, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity had bolstered fans’ hopes for a playable Zelda in Breath of the Wild 2. The game features the exact same Zelda as Breath of the Wild, or at least a version of her on a parallel timeline. What’s more, Hyrule Warriors appears to be canonical. Zelda’s able to fight both before she awakens her powers, with the help of incredibly imaginative uses for the Sheikah Slate, and after, when she can utilize her light bow and sealing powers. Hyrule Warriors provided a context for how this Zelda, who was already clearly a badass, could fight in a mainline game.

However, back in 2016, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma made an incredibly dispiriting statement in an interview: “If we have Princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?” To ease the pain of that quote, it should be noted that this was five years ago, and there has been a fighting protagonist Zelda since then with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

So, technically, hope isn’t entirely lost. With as tight-lipped as Nintendo has been, there could be another act of the game where the player will be able to control Zelda. It’s also worth considering that the face of that falling figure is never seen – or any figure after those first shots of Link and Zelda. So if it’s not Link in the gameplay shots, could it be Zelda? On one hand, that loose hair style might actually better fit Zelda’s new, shorter hairstyle from the 2019 teaser, but on the other, the prominent tech-laden arm really points to Link. The figure also appears to be wearing Link’s boxers under the tunic in the falling sequence.

Despite the Breath of the Wild 2 trailer pushing excitement and speculation around the game sky-high (pun intended), players hoping for gameplay as the princess should still probably check their expectations. If nothing else, at least Zelda is able to take it out on several thousand Bokoblins in Age of Calamity.
