Will Fans Get To See The Old Gohan In Dragon Ball Super Super Hero

Goku might be the face of Dragon Ball, but the long-running series has introduced a handful of characters who have developed their own massive followings among the fan base. Anti-heroes like Piccolo and Vegeta have become just as recognizable among the series’ main cast. Though Super has reaffirmed Goku’s place as Dragon Ball’s number one, the series once played around with the idea of giving someone else that role. Gohan was introduced during the Saiyan Saga as Goku’s mild-mannered son. Though he showed tons of raw potential in the conflicts following his introduction, Gohan truly started to stand out towards the tail end of the Cell Saga.

With Goku having sacrificed himself to give his friends and family a chance at defeating the bio-android, Gohan capitalized off of his father’s efforts and established himself as the series’ strongest character. But Gohan was never able to maintain that momentum in subsequent Sagas, and was quickly dropped out of prominence, giving Goku a chance to restore the status quo during the Buu Saga. With Gohan set to play a role in the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film, and the character featured prominently in a recent teaser trailer, fans might finally see him make his triumphant return.

What Happened to Gohan?

By the end of the Cell Saga, Gohan looked ready to succeed his father as the Earth’s protector. This wasn’t something that had been expected of the character, as Gohan had long been established as someone who would rather avoid conflict if possible. Gohan essentially lacked the competitive drive that battle-hungry Saiyans like his father and Vegeta had.

Following the post-Cell timeskip, Gohan grows to resemble Goku in his kindness and cheery demeanor, but as expected, has not put the same kind of effort into training and building off of the power he showed when fighting Cell. Fans would find out as the series went on that while Gohan still possessed the raw potential that made him such an imposing force, he never truly capitalized off of it as he grew.

This explanation makes sense in-universe, but there were external factors at play as well. Many fans blame Akira Toriyama’s editor for Gohan’s perceived nerf post-Cell. But the author has admitted that he didn’t find Gohan capable of carrying the series the same way that Goku could as its main character.

Because of this, Goku and later on Vegeta, would go on to push themselves and become exponentially stronger. This regulated Gohan – like many others before him – to more of a supporting role, unable to bridge the power gap between himself and the series two lead Saiyans.

Potential Role in Super Hero

Gohan has mellowed out exponentially in his adulthood, becoming more of a straightforward family man than his father. While Super showed that the potential that once made him the series’ strongest character is still there, things never really clicked in the anime. Now set to return in Super Hero, Gohan might just show some long-awaited progression.

With the evil Red Ribbon Army back in the fold, things might not turn out so well for Goku and his loved ones. Pan being in the film might give a clue as to Gohan’s involvement in the narrative, as he’s been shown to be at his best when protecting the ones he loves.

Though it’s unlikely that Gohan will surpass or even get close to Goku and Vegeta’s current levels, Super Hero could see Gohan take his first steps towards significance in future entries. With Goku, Vegeta, and now Broly, standing as Universe 7’s strongest fighters, he certainly has a lot of competition. But fans know just how strong Gohan can be. Whether or not he returns to prominence is up to Toriyama to decide.
