Will Hugh Jackman Be The MCUs Wolverine Everything We Know

Once again, rumors about Hugh Jackman returning to play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are swirling; here’s everything we know about this possibility. Arguably one of the best superhero castings, the Australian actor played the scruffy mutant for 17 years until he retired the character in Logan. Despite that, however, there are still some holding out hope that he’ll reprise the role at least one more time now that the X-Men are set to join the MCU.

Directed by James Mangold and released in early 2017, Logan functioned not only as Jackman’s swan song as Wolverine, but also Patrick Stewart who played the original Professor X. Set in a dystopian world that was mostly removed from the convoluted X-Men continuity, the gritty film was both a critical and box office success. For its titular character, however, it was an emotional send-off with Wolverine dying in order to save his daughter, X-23. Later in the same year, news broke out that Disney was acquiring Fox’s TV and movie assets. This meant that the character rights for the mutants, Fantastic Four, and their tie-in characters could finally be integrated into the MCU.

So, despite the Oscar-worthy Logan being a satisfying conclusion to Wolverine’s story, calls for the actor to play the role again, this time in the MCU, began. This way, Jackman’s version of the mutant can interact with the Avengers and other heroes who previously existed separately from the Fox/X-Men universe. While the actor has been adamant about moving on from the character, a new wave of rumors has spread after his new social media posts.

What Hugh Jackman Has Said About Being The MCU’s Wolverine

For years now, Jackman has been hounded by questions about the possibility of him revisiting his role as Wolverine, and for the most part, he’s been consistent about debunking it. In late 2017, he expressed his excitement to see who Marvel Studios’ Wolverine will be. A few years later in 2020 when he was once again asked about the matter, he still sounded content with his decision to move on from his breakthrough role. The actor has cited the increasing difficulty of keeping up with the physical demands of playing the role as he ages as one of the reasons for his decision to walk away from the part which is totally understandable.

That being said, Jackman also candidly admitted that if there was a chance that the X-Men would be in the MCU, he would continue playing the role. This comment was made on the heels of Logan’s release and months before news of Disney and Fox’s deal was publicized. Jackman cited being intrigued with the idea of seeing Wolverine interact with the Hulk and Iron Man specifically.

Hugh Jackman Has Teased A Return As Wolverine For The MCU

Recently, Jackman took it to his official Instagram to post an image of himself and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, alongside a fan-art of Wolverine’s iconic claws, kickstarting a swirl of rumors of his Marvel return. Of course, it can just be random images that the actor wanted to share; nevertheless, it’s worth examining the chances of him possibly reprising his comic book role. As it stands, it’s still unlikely that it will happen. Aside from his latest social media activity, there’s no concrete indication to back up these claims. The fact that Logan capped off his run as the mutant makes his potential return as Wolverine also much trickier.

That being said, the MCU has been bringing back several Marvel actors/characters from previously separated franchises such as JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, and maybe even Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as two separate iterations of Spider-Man. Something similar is also happening over at DC, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman in The Flash film. Given this trend, not to mention Jackman’s high regard for Feige, his reprisal of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may not be a total pipe dream at this point.
