Will MK11 DLC Add Cole From Mortal Kombats New Movie

Will Cole, the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie’s original character, be included in future DLC for Mortal Kombat 11? Since the 1990s, the Mortal Kombat franchise has been thrilling gamers (and terrifying parents) with its over-the-top violence and fantastical pantheon of colorful characters. MK11 released in 2019, and although the game has seen a fair share of controversy (mostly involving microtransactions), the franchise’s co-creator, Ed Boon, shared on Twitter in October 2020 that MK11 has topped eight million units sold.

The Mortal Kombat series has had mixed results with movie adaptations. The 1995 film, Mortal Kombat, remains a cult classic (kult klassic?), especially with former ‘90s kids. Meanwhile, its sequel, 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, is generally despised by both fans and critics. The upcoming film, currently scheduled for release on April 16, 2021, is being billed as a reboot for the movie side of the franchise. The story centers around Cole Young, a brand new character, who enters the infamous tournament to uncover his mysterious past.

Despite the fact that Mortal Kombat 11 is two years old, NetherRealm Studios continues to create new and constantly-updating content for the title to persuade fans to stay interested over the long haul. This includes new game modes (like the Towers of Time, which can be played alone or “ko-op”) and the MK11: Aftermath expansion. NetherRealm has also released two Kombat Packs containing new playable characters, and a third Kombat Pack was leaked in December 2020, with a release date presumably in spring 2021.

Will MK11 Add Cole As DLC?

Since the debut of the new Mortal Kombat movie possibly coincides with the release of Kombat Pack 3, what are the odds that series newbie Cole Young will be featured as a playable character? The answer depends a great deal on Warner Bros. Entertainment, owner of the Mortal Kombat IP. On one hand, cross-promotion seems like the obvious path. However, the move is not without risk. Despite the fact that MK11 already includes 37 playable characters (including a dozen from DLC), a lot of big names are missing from the roster. The MK universe boasts nearly 100 characters. If WBE were to include Cole while shunning established fan favorites, like Havik and Smoke, it would likely prove to be a poor gamble.

Rumors surrounding Kombat Pack 3 suggest a higher price point than Kombat Pack 2, which could mean the DLC might feature six characters rather than three. The leak mentions Smoke, Sareena, Havik, and Deathstroke, and this could conceivably leave room for Cole as an addition. However, if the MK fanbase doesn’t end up embracing the new film and its new character, it might have the unintended consequence of steering players away from Kombat Pack 3. Of course, WBE could wait to include Cole in future Kombat Packs after it has verified whether the core fanbase has accepted Cole into the canon, or relegate him to a future Mortal Kombat movie skins pack.

Right now, the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie appears to be trying to please both the established MK fanbase and brand new audiences. It’s chosen a protagonist who is new to the universe, which is a useful storytelling tool that allows exposition to be delivered in a more natural manner to audience members (who may be equally naïve to the world’s lore). However, director Simon McQuoid has embraced an R-rating – rather than the more box office friendly PG-13 – and promised that the movie will live up to the franchise’s notorious level of gore. The Mortal Kombat film may be trying to charm both sides, but when it comes to MK11 DLC, expect WBE to play it safe and go for crowd pleasers over Cole.
