Will The Crown Tundra Feature New Fusion Pokémon

Pokémon Sword & Shield’s second DLC, The Crown Tundra, is set to release next week, but an interesting theory has emerged about the expansion pack’s potential plot. Legendary Pokémon will play a major role in The Crown Tundra, as players will now be able to catch almost every legendary Pokémon that’s appeared in the series. In addition, two new Regi’s, Galarian forms for the Kanto birds, and a new legendary Pokemon named Calyrex will also be introduced in the DLC. Trailers haven’t revealed too much in terms of what The Crown Tundra’s plot might entail, but, luckily, dataminers have already found some juicy tip bits that suggest some major things.

After one of the recent updates to The Isle of Armor, the first DLC released for Pokémon Sword & Shield, dataminers were able to find out some new details about The Crown Tundra thanks to a few data dumps. While players already know about the new legendaries making their debut in the next DLC, it seems there may be two more new legendaries that have yet to be revealed. In The Crown Tundra Pokédex, there are two Pokémon listed as, “HAKUBA,” and “KOKUBA,” between the entries for Calyrex and the new Regi’s. Considering their placement in the Dex, these two Pokémon are more than likely two additional new legendary Pokémon. Game Freak has also used codenames for certain Pokémon in the past, so their names listed in the data dump are likely just a placeholder.

Dataminers have also found that Calyrex will likely be able to fuse with these two yet-to-be-revealed Pokémon. Two new items were found in the DLC with a similar ability as the DNA Splicer, which was used to fuse Kyurem with Reshiram and Zekrom, and the Solarizers, which were used to fuse Necrozma with Solgaleo and Lunala. There are two additional Pokédex entries for Pokémon named “HAKURAUN” and “KOKURAUN.” These are likely codenames, again, to hide the actual identities of these Pokémon, but they could be the full form of Calyrex after he fuses with Hakuba or Kokuba, whose codenames translate to “white horse” and “black horse” in Japanese.

How Will Players Be Able To Catch And Fuse Calyrex?

In addition to everything that’s been discovered about these unnamed legendaries, it may have also been discovered when they might appear in-game. Dataminers have revealed that The Crown Tundra will be broken up into four chapters. The first chapter, “A Legendary Tree For A Legendary Three!” will more than likely deal with the Galarian forms of the Kanto birds. The second chapters, “The Terrible Titans… Lurking, Locked Away!” seems like it would have to do with the Regi’s. The third chapter, “They Came From the Ultra Beyond!” would obviously be the Ultra Beasts. And the fourth, and final, chapter, “The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed!” by process of elimination, would have to do with Calyrex – but what does the title of the chapter mean?

The last chapter takes a little bit of research to explain, but thankfully Reddit user u/JustThatGuy100 did all the leg work already. Considering the themes of Pokémon Sword & Shield as well as The Crown Tundra, it’s likely that this new legendary trio will be based on the Crown Jewels. One of the pieces in the Crown Jewel set is called the Sovereign Orb, which could be the root of “sovereign” in the chapter’s title. The “steed” aspect may pertain to the Royal Family’s Coat of Arms, which features a unicorn next to the crown. Other than the crown and Sovereign Orb, a scepter is the third piece of the Crown Jewels. This “steed” the title refers to may be a unicorn, which would be the scepter completing the Crown Jewels in this legendary trio. Once the trio is together, players will be able to fuse each with Calyrex.

This may sound like a bit of a reach, but it’s all based on historical context and information that’s already been found in Sword & Shield’s data. Considering how little has been shown of Calyrex compared to other legendaries like Urshifu and the new Galarian birds, Game Freak could have a surprise in store. Fans will just have to wait until October 22nd when The Crown Tundra officially hits Pokémon Sword & Shield.
