Witcher How Season 2s Bruxae Are Different To Horror Film Vampires

The Witcher season 2 will introduce new characters from this vast universe, among those the bruxae, the equivalent of vampires but who are different from those seen in horror films – here’s how. Based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher made the jump to the world of streaming in December 2019 thanks to Netflix. The series was a big success and was renewed for a second season even before the first one came out, and fans have been patiently waiting for the new episodes to arrive.

The series chose a different approach to the stories and followed three different characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), the title witcher; Yennefer of Vengerbeg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra. The Witcher season 2 has gone through a couple of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, but production is officially over and fans won’t have to wait for long to hear news about the new episodes. In the meantime, those who are not familiar with the mythology of The Witcher can get acquainted with some of the new characters that will be introduced in season 2, such as the bruxae.

Among the new characters that will make the jump from The Witcher books to the TV series is Vereena (Agnes Bjorn), a powerful bruxa who appears in the book The Last Wish, along with another new character named Nivellen (Kristofer Hivju). A bruxa is a powerful type of vampire in The Witcher universe and who takes on the appearance of a dark-haired, young human (usually a woman), but whose natural form is that of a large, black bat with sharp fans and claws. However, even though they fall into the category of vampires, they are very different from those the horror genre has made famous, so much that the bruxae might not seem like vampires at all.

The origins of the bruxae in The Witcher are unclear as the books haven’t explored their backstory, but Geralt has come across some of them a couple of times. Bruxae are agile and can’t be harmed with garlic, holy water, crucifixes, and wooden stakes like traditional vampires in pop culture, and instead the only weapon effective against them is silver swords. Bruxae let out a piercing scream with enough power to send a grown man flying through the air and they don’t really need to drink blood to survive but they do it anyway as it can make them stronger and blood acts as a sort of alcohol to them, and their bites don’t turn the victim into a vampire. Another difference between them and traditional vampires in horror movies is that they are not affected by sunlight, which definitely gives them a big advantage when compared to horror movie vampires and makes them more dangerous.

It’s to be seen if The Witcher season 2 will expand the origins and more about the bruxae through Vereena (and possibly more characters), further setting them apart from the vampires known through horror movies, TV shows, books, and more. The new episodes of The Witcher will surely bring more action and darkness to this universe, and fans just have to wait a bit more to hear news about their release.
