A new clip from The Witcher season 2 shows Geralt and Ciri arriving at Kaer Morhen. Based on the stories by Andrzej Sapkowski and propelled by the overwhelming popularity of CD Projekt RED’s video games, Netflix’s The Witcher premiered in December 2019. Season 1 became one of the streamer’s biggest first seasons of television ever, more than warranting its season 2 and already-confirmed The Witcher season 3.

While The Witcher has streamlined many of the short stories in The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, season 1 deviated from its source material in one major way: using three timelines to introduce Henry Cavill’s Geralt, Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer, and Freya Allan’s Ciri. The trio’s timelines gradually converge until Geralt finally finds his Child of Surprise, Ciri, at the end of The Witcher season 1. Adapting stories from Blood of Elves, season 2’s more linear narrative will take the pair to a very significant location in the universe: Kaer Morhen, the old fortress where witchers were made and are trained. Outside of Sapkowski’s books and the games, Kaer Morhen was featured in the recent anime movie, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which followed Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir, and the fall of Kaer Morhen. That being said, one of the biggest casting announcements for The Witcher season 2 was that of Kim Bodnia as Vesemir and a handful of other witchers.

IGN recently shared an exclusive clip from The Witcher season 2 showing Geralt and Ciri arriving at Kaer Morhen. Following the season 2 finale, and Yennefer’s sacrifice at the Battle of Sodden that causes Geralt to believe she’s dead, Geralt decides to take Ciri to his childhood home to escape Nilfgaard (among other things). The below clip is from The Witcher season 2, episode 2, aptly titled “Kaer Morhen.”

As seen above, the decrepit Kaer Morhen is a shadow of its former glory and witchers are going extinct. That being said, Ciri won’t undergo the same mutations/Trail of Dreams as past witcher recruits, but she certainly won’t be wearing dresses in season 2. In the books, Ciri is trained at Kaer Morhen. Vesemir teaches her about monsters and herbs, and Lambert (Paul Bullion) and Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz) and Coën (Yasen Atour) train her in the art of combat. On top of that, she continues to grapple with her mysterious powers seen in The Witcher season 1.

Fans of The Witcher have waited two years from season 2 and it looks to deliver a lot more than Kaer Morhen. Still, the old fortress should become a staple/home base of the series for all of its main characters. Despite Yennefer starting the season as a Nilfgaardian prisoner, she’ll inevitably free herself and meet up with Geralt and Ciri, becoming the mother to Geralt’s father figure for Ciri. It remains to be seen if Kaer Morhen will be featured in its former glory in the live-action prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin. Regardless, Kaer Morhen is almost here, and looks to play a pivotal role in The Witcher season 2
