The Wizard of Oz is one of those fantasy films that is truly timeless. Generations of children (and adults) have lost themselves in the journey that Dorothy takes to the magical land of Oz. After all, what’s not to love about the film? It has some truly extraordinary acting talent—including, most notably, Judy Garland in the role of Dorothy—and the Technicolor Oz remains one of the most vibrant and beautiful things ever brought to the screen.

As iconic as it is, however, there are still some things that, even now, are hard to understand about the film, its stories, and its characters.

10 What Exactly Is The Relationship Between The Witch Of The West And Glinda?

From the moment that they both appear on the screen, it’s obvious that there’s some sort of preexisting relationship between Glinda and the Witch of the West. However, it’s not clear exactly what it is, nor why they clearly have so much antipathy toward one another. Clearly, they’re both witches, so it’s natural to assume that there might even be some form of kinship between them, but fans can’t help but wonder just how they know each other.

9 Why Did The Winkies Serve The Witch If They Disliked Her So Much?

After Dorothy is captured by the flying monkeys and taken to the Witch’s castle, her friends pursue her and ultimately disguise themselves as three Winkies, the formidable guards in charge of the castle. As soon as the Witch is dead, however, the Winkies act as if they hated her all along. If, in fact, she was such a monster, why were they so devout in serving her and in attacking Dorothy’s friends as they tried to save her?

8 Where Did The Flying Monkeys Come From?

Arguably one of the most terrifying aspects of this film (and of fantasy films in general) is the presence of the flying monkeys. They just seem so utterly inhuman—especially compared to the other creatures that appear in the film—that it’s hard not to be totally scared at their presence. It’s also unclear where, exactly, they come from. For that matter, it’s hard to understand just why there are so many of them that the Witch can clearly command.

7 What Was The Relationship Between The Witch And The Wizard?

There are many things that are difficult to understand about the Wizard of Oz, particularly when it comes to the relationships between and among the various characters. This includes the Witch and the Wizard.

One can’t help but think that there must be some truly bad blood between them, considering the fact that the Wizard sends Dorothy off to get the broomstick (which, of course, means that she has to die first).

6 How Does The Wizard Not Know How The Hot Air Balloon Works?

At the end of the film, the Wizard inadvertently takes off in his hot air balloon, leaving Dorothy behind, even though he’d promised to take her back to Kansas with him. When she begs him to come back, he replies with “I don’t know how it works.” Now, even by the standards of the Wizard, a notorious huckster, this strains credulity. If he doesn’t know how it works, how did he get there in the first place? And besides, one would think that in all his years in Oz he might have made some effort to learn how a hot air balloon works.

5 Why Did The Witch Have Water In Her Castle At All?

The melting of the Witch of the West with a pail of water is one of the film’s most indelible images. The fact that it happens by accident is part of the irony of this moment. However, the fact that there is even a pail of water at all doesn’t really make sense. One would assume that she would know that she could literally be melted by it, so it doesn’t really make a lot of sense that she would have even a drop of it in her castle, let alone a whole bucket.

4 What Happened To Almira Gulch?

One of the most notable conceits of the film is that most of the characters who appear in Oz have their real life counterparts in Kansas. The most notable example of this is the Witch of the West, who is embodied in Kansas by the tyrannical and vindictive Almira Gulch.

Of all of the doubles, she’s the only one who doesn’t appear at the end when Dorothy returns, so this leads one to wonder: what exactly happened to her?

3 Why Didn’t Glinda Know The Wizard Was Useless?

Very soon after she arrives in Oz, Dorothy meets the Good Witch Glinda. Though Glinda tries to be helpful, she ends up looking quite credulous. After all, she’s the one who sends Dorothy off to find the Wizard, with the implication that the man in the Emerald City will be able to help her. She had to know, though, that the Wizard was a charlatan and, if she knew that, then she put Dorothy through everything for nothing. Not exactly a very good thing to do, is it?

2 How Exactly Did The Wizard Become A Ruler?

It’s not hard to see that the Wizard, like his counterpart Professor Marvel, is nothing more than a fake. However, despite his obvious mediocrity, he’s somehow managed to become one of the most powerful people in Oz, with a reputation that has clearly spread far and wide. It’s hard not to wonder, though, how such an obviously bland man became a ruler at all, still less one with such a fearsome reputation.

1 Who Exactly Was The Witch Of The East?

The Witch of the East is one of fantasy’s most tantalizing enigmas. While the viewer learns that she is the sister of the Witch of the West, it’s not clear what else she is. Is she just a sort of horrible person who swoops in to terrorize the Munchkins, or does she have some sort of formal ruler role? Alas, the film never really answers the question. All we see of her are her legs and feet sticking out from under the house.
