Wolverines Greatest Variant Returns to Battle Thor & Storm

Warning: contains a preview of Demon Days: Rising Storm #1

There are few alternate versions of Wolverine who fans prefer to the original, but Demon Days: Rising Storm #1 is about to test that rule by bringing back Logan’s lupine doppelganger to battle both Thor and Storm. Writer and artist Peach Momoko’s Demon Days series serves as a delightfully unique interpretation of Marvel Comics that blends classic comic characters with Japanese folklore. Rising Storm #1 will mark Momoko’s fourth and penultimate chapter of this epic reinterpretation.

When it releases on December 15, Rising Storm #1 will see Demon Days’ central character, Mariko Yashida, continuing to venture off into the Kirisaki Mountains. This time, she is destined to run into Momoko’s interpretations of Marvel’s respective X-Men and Avengers mainstays, Storm and Thor. But as with the previous entries into this series, Yashida will not be alone. She’ll be joined by her trusty, hairy companion, Logan.

In a preview shared by AIPT, Demon Days: Rising Storm #1 starts off with Mariko stewing in her guilt regarding a previous encounter with a Yokai, where Mariko drank the Yokai’s blood. Mariko is visibly and internally coming apart at the seams until she’s snapped out of it by Logan. On the way into Obin’s Hideout, a starved and thirsty Mariko relishes drinking from a nearby river, Mariko suddenly finds herself face to face with a beardless Thor and a seemingly infantile Storm. Whatever happens beyond this preview, it’s clear that both Mariko and Logan are prepared for a battle, and they’re right to worry, as the two weather manipulators were sent by the demonic Ogin.

As a character first introduced in 1974, Wolverine has had countless tweaks and redesigns, as well as alternate iterations (or variants – a term for alternate-reality versions of heroes popularized by the MCU’s Loki) of someone with a nearly 50-year comic book history. One consistent quality has been Wolverine’s signature savagery and loyalty. A tame wolf is actually the perfect metaphor for Logan’s true nature – a noble beast committed to putting his violent potential to decent ends.

In Demon Days, Wolverine is depicted as an ageless brute of a wolf with hundreds of years worth of history to his name. Momoko’s Demon Days: X-Men #1 showed the wolf named Logan escape certain death after protecting a small village in Japan from a red Oni. He made it out alive merely with an eye scar. Now, years later, readers may get to see the full extent of Logan’s abilities when put to the test against two actual gods. Readers will have to wait and see on December 15, 2021, when Demon Days: Rising Storm #1 hits retailers, and Wolverine and Mariko face off against Thor and Storm.
