Wonder Woman 10 Things Wed Like To See In The New Video Game

At The Game Awards 2021, it was revealed the DC superheroine, Wonder Woman, is finally getting her own video game. This is the first solo game for her, outside of an obscure mobile title. She’s appeared in other DC games but never headlined a game. And she’s got 70 years of history to bring to gaming.

From the trailer, we see a render of Diana and her lasso. Narration, presumably from Diana’s mother Hippolyta, says that Diana must return home to protect their shores. This implies that Themyscira will be an open world to explore. Interviews with developer Monolith confirm the Middle-Earth games’ famous Nemesis system will be in the game. But what other features can we expect?

Her Variety Of Weapons

While Diana is well known for her whip, Wonder Woman has a variety of weapons she could bring into an action game and the lasso is well-represented in the trailer. The most iconic weapon for the modern character is her Sword of Athena, but she has many other swords and games are no stranger to equipping different swords for different bonuses.

She also wields the Aegis buckler shield. This sword and shield fighting style could make the playstyle similar to Link from the Legend of Zelda series. Her arsenal extends beyond this too. It includes spears, staves, axes, bows, and weaponized earrings. She also throws her tiara, just like Captain America’s shield.

Bullet Blocking Bracers

Diana’s bracelets are the most iconic of her arsenal besides the lasso and the iconic images of Diana show her deflecting bullets with her bracelets. This just begs for the inclusion of a counter move that replicates the bullet reflecting action. While the bracelets are most famous for deflecting bullets, they’ve even blocked giant lasers.

For a video game, though, equipment must be upgradeable. Luckily, Wonder Woman lore offers an option. The Gauntlets of Atlas were previously used to hold up the sky, but also offer Diana a big boost in strength. Being able to augment your bracelets with gauntlets would allow you to increase your strength.

Man’s World

The island of Themyscira will be featured, that is certain. But Diana has always been of two worlds. Indeed, judging from the narration in the trailer, Diana is returning from Man’s World to Themyscira. And while the island is exciting, it would be a shame to not have the outside world feature.

The Amazonian homeland is great, but Man’s World has tons of stories. Of course, Wonder Woman left the island during World Wars and stayed there. Having levels set abroad would be exciting, but having the open-world extend to Man’s World would be cooler. Whether or not this happens, fans hope to see Diana do hero work outside of Themyscira.

Invisible Plane

A silly but beloved part of the mythos is the invisible jet. Sometimes it’s a gift from gods and sometimes it’s a modern plane. While its origins have shifted over time, it has remained one of Diana’s iconic tools. The plane would work well in game context as fast travel.

While it would be exciting to have a dogfighting sequence, this seems unlikely. It may be difficult to determine hurt boxes on an invisible object. However, the jet could easily be used to pick up and deposit Diana as fast travel. Buses and trains already serve this purpose in other superhero titles, so why not a plane?

Romantic Options

One aspect that has always been lacking in superhero titles was the romance. Typically, if the main character had a love interest, it was canonical to the story and couldn’t be changed. However, Wonder Woman has had many love interests over the years due to her immortal life. This gives the opportunity to bring in as many as possible as optional encounters.

While the most iconic love interest is Steve Trevor, it might be difficult to include him if the game takes a modern setting. She’s also been with Batman and Superman before, but including them would detract from her headlining her own title. But there are plenty of other options, like Keith Briggs and Trevor Barnes and options for other women from the isle of Amazons, like Kaisa.

A Pantheon Of Gods

Despite the 2017 film killing off most Greek gods in the backstory, Greek mythology is alive in Wonder Woman films and comics. Throughout most comics, the Gods are relevant factors and characters. The most iconic is Ares, the God of War, who will likely be the main antagonist of this game, but there are plenty of others besides him who play major roles.

Athena, from whom Diana takes her sword, is often portrayed as a mentor or antagonist in the series, along with Hera. Zeus and Hades also have big roles in the character’s history. They’ve both, at different times, been credited as being Diana’s father. Getting to interact with all these deities could take the road of Hades, where they are allies, or God of War, where they are enemies. Fans will have to wait and see.

Nubia

If you’re not familiar with Nubia, she’s Wonder Woman’s sister and has an interesting history. While debuting in the ’70s, she’s not been seen as consistently as other Amazons. This is a shame, as she’s DC’s first Black heroine. However, in modern times, she has found a more consistent presence as Wonder Woman’s predecessor who held the title before she did.

Nubia’s recent return to the comics has been very popular, so it would be a shame not to see her in the game. Plus, her unique relationship with Diana means there are plenty of video game roles she could fit into. She could fit into a side character with spin-off teases, like Miles Morales in the Spider-Man game. But she could also serve as a mentor, an ally, or even possibly a rival during the story.

Flight

Any action game featuring DC characters is going to draw comparisons to the Batman: Arkham series. Even though the characters are different, an action game with plenty of different weapons for taking on groups could end up resembling Batman’s fighting style. However, there’s one thing that Wonder Woman has that Batman lacks. Wonder Woman, much like Superman, can fly.

Flight is always a touchy subject in video games as it can easily break level design. Wonder Woman media, in particular, tends to downplay her flight as to not make her too similar to Superman. But in order to differentiate the gameplay from Batman, giving her flight is essential. Also, as no standout Superman title has yet released, great flight is still unheard of in superhero games.

A Rogue’s Gallery Of Villains

Wonder Woman 10 Things Wed Like To See In The New Video Game

Like any superhero worth their salt, Wonder Woman has a gallery of villains who can serve as bosses. They may not have the recognizability of other rogues, but there’s no slouch in variety. While Ares is probably her most famous mythological villain, she’s also fought Circe, Morgan le Fey, Apollo, and Medusa. Of course, other than mythology’s greatest hits, there are plenty of other villains.

The most famous Wonder Woman villain is probably Cheetah, who recently appeared in the films. While she has little to do with Themyscira, it would seem odd to not include her. Villains like Giganta and Dr. Psycho would also make sense given they would bring unique powers of being gigantic and telepathy respectively. Even a sidequest that includes wimpy villains, like Angle Man, would be neat.

Army Battles

With the revelation that the game is taking place on Themyscira, fans are hoping to see badass Amazonian warfare. The Amazonian military might is nothing to sneeze at, and mobilizing them for a conflict is tantalizing. Diana has often led Amazons into battle, so the chance to lead the charge in a game is exciting. After all, Greek Hoplite-style warfare is underrepresented in action games.

Given the developer’s history with Lord of the Rings titles, army fighting seems like a good call. Unlike the other big DC heroes, Wonder Woman has lots of experience fighting in war. So, leading a giant battle of Amazons versus invading forces would be great; protecting ancient cities from incursion. This is where the developer’s previous Nemesis System feature shined. But all in all, Wonder Woman has a ton of stuff to do when protecting Themyscira.
