Wonder Woman 1984 Why Wonder Woman is Still Learning New Powers

In Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel to Patty Jenkins’ 2017 blockbuster Wonder Woman, Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is still learning about her powers and uncovering new abilities, such as invisibility and flight, which are tied to her origins as a demigod and the biological daughter of Zeus. While the Greek god Zeus is not a pivotal figure within William Moulton Marston’s original Wonder Woman comics, since Diana alternatively didn’t have a father and was sculpted out of clay by her mother Hippolyta, the DC Comics’ Wonder Woman reboot written and illustrated by George Pérez altered Diana’s origin story to include the influence of Greek deities, which became canon within the DC Extended Universe.

The Greek gods play an important role within the DCEU since the conflict in both Wonder Woman films is centered on the Greek gods’ influence on mankind. While the first film revealed how the God of War, Ares (David Thewlis), instigated World War I, Wonder Woman 1984 has the Greek gods impact human civilization indirectly through the Dreamstone, an ancient artifact created by the God of Lies that grants wishes in exchange for a person’s most precious possession. When Diana and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) travel to Egypt to stop Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) from using the Dreamstone, Diana uncovers a new ability that allows her to turn the jet they stole from the Air Force invisible. While many of Diana’s powers introduced within Marston’s Golden Age comics, including her super strength and immortality, come from her Amazonian background, many of Diana’s new powers within Wonder Woman 1984 were passed down to her from her father Zeus.

Within both Wonder Woman films, Diana discovers that she has additional powers once she examines her lineage. When Ares revealed to Diana that she was the biological daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta in Wonder Woman, the knowledge that she was a demigod helped her unlock new powers she inherited from her father during her fight with Ares back in 1918 during Wonder Woman’s ending. Just as Zeus is known for harnessing lightning, Diana learns after Ares hits her with lightning bolts that she’s able to channel lightning herself. Similarly, in Wonder Woman 1984, Diana explains to Steve that she was first inspired to harness the power of invisibility because she wanted to learn how her father Zeus turned the entire island of Themyscira invisible to hide it from the world. While Diana admits that she has only used the power to turn a cup invisible in the past, she successfully turns the entire jet invisible and hides their plane from the Airmen’s radar.

Diana’s lineage to Zeus also strengthens another power of Diana’s unveiled within Wonder Woman: flight. During Diana’s final battle with Ares, she jumps high into the air and briefly hovers above the ground before she defeats Ares. In Wonder Woman 1984, however, Diana uses her Lasso of Truth to launch herself up into the clouds and soar through the sky, employing Steve’s advice on catching and riding the wind. While Diana flew within Pérez’s Wonder Woman run when Hermes gifted her his winged sandals, Diana flies entirely on her own in Wonder Woman 1984 by gliding along the wind, which again may be due to her parentage since Zeus was the Greek god of the sky who had the ability to control the weather.

Additionally, Diana could still learn new abilities based on her journey within the DCEU. While the mall heist at the beginning of Wonder Woman 1984 shows that Diana still protects people from everyday threats, she’s required to do so covertly so as not to attract too much attention. Diana has always appeared to uncover new abilities under the pressure of large-scale conflicts, suggesting she has yet to discover the full range of her abilities and that even more Wonder Woman demigod powers will likely be discovered in Wonder Woman 3.
