Wonder Woman Reminds Fans Shes Way Darker Than Most Will Admit

Warning: Spoilers for Wonder Woman #781!

In DC Comics’ lexicon of Wonder Woman villains, there are many, but now that Diana’s finally returned from her trip across realms, she’s got some choice words for Doctor Psycho, a classic villain of hers that just doesn’t know when to stop acting like he’s up to no good. Doctor Psycho getting a book deal after giving Diana a hard time while she was stuck in Asgard has clearly rubbed Wonder Woman the wrong way, and she isn’t afraid to express it.

Threatening Edgar Cizko aka Doctor Psycho during Wonder Woman #781, by Michael W. Conrad, Becky Cloonan, and Marcio Takara, this verbal threat comes at a time in Diana’s life that sees her more annoyed than usual. Finally arriving back home on Earth-0 proper after having crossed realms following her “death” at the end of the Dark Nights: Death Metal, Diana is catching up with a close friend over some food when the ugly mug of Doctor Psycho pops up on a nearby television.

Noticed first by Wonder Woman’s friend, Etta Candy, it’s revealed that Doctor Psycho has recently published a book titled The Delusion, prompting Diana to wonder aloud how long she’s truly been gone for. And after Etta cuts short their reunion to deal with something Steve Trevor — Diana’s consistent love interest and friend — needs, Wonder Woman decides to drop a line on Doctor Psycho to make sure he isn’t up to his usual evil shenanigans.

Finding Doctor Psycho cruising down a city street, Diana stops his car with one well-placed palm and makes her intentions for the man abundantly clear. Saying, “I can smell your schemes from a mile away, and whatever you’re doing here? It stinks,” Wonder Woman continues to threateningly say, “Remember…justice isn’t a dish you can serve cold. When I crush you under my heel, it will be well deserved — and garnished with the recent memories of your foul deeds. You’re on borrowed time, Doctor,” effectively putting one of her staple villains on notice in the most brutal way possible.

Last seen up to no good while Diana was trapped in the Norse heaven of Asgard during an earlier story arc, Doctor Psycho getting a book deal in a legit way that has no strings attached to any kind of nefarious scheme is something that Wonder Woman wants to address and nip in the bud as soon as possible. Having powerful telepathic powers, the ability to control minds, astral project, and even manipulate psionic energy, Wonder Woman worrying about Doctor Psycho only to exert her dominance over a villain that’s up to no good more often than not (especially with a book titled The Delusion of all things now under his belt), comes across as a proper reaction for a hero that usually doesn’t mince words.

Leaving Doctor Psycho with one last promise that the truth will always come out, the idea that Edgar Cizko wouldn’t be doing something shady is a long shot and a risk not worth taking. Wonder Woman most definitely doesn’t trust Doctor Psycho, so the implications of her words will no doubt have major ramifications down the line in future issues.
