Diana Prince has taken over Gal Gadot’s Instagram ahead of Wonder Woman 1984’s Christmas day release. The Wonder Woman sequel will hit HBO Max and theaters this Friday. It will remain on the platform for free for subscribers for 31 days, the first of Warner Bros. upcoming slate to do so. Anticipation for the film is high after the runaway success of the first film.

Early reviews have praised the film as a heartfelt sequel, one that builds on its predecessor’s successes. That will surely please fans who have waited over three years for the film. Facing a slew of delays, Wonder Woman 1984 has had a long road to theaters even before the pandemic. Sticking to its guns, Warner Bros. maintained the film’s release date even as the rest of 2020’s movies shifted to 2021. Before the film’s release, Gadot promotes the film on Instagram by giving fans a glimpse into Diana Prince’s mind.

Gadot has begun posting on Instagram in character, changing her display name to Diana Prince. Gadot, who has over 47 million followers, posted a video yesterday introducing “herself” as Diana Prince and revealing that her alter ego would be posting on Gadot’s account for the next few days leading up to the film’s release. So far, she’s posted pictures of a young Diana Prince, Steve Trevor in his WWI garb, and a few other snapshots. Check them out below:

This Instagram takeover is a creative way to promote the movie ahead of its release. One of the reasons Warner Bros. has pushed so hard for the HBO Max release were fears that buzz for the film would fizzle out if they waited any longer to release it. While there’s no telling if that’s true, the decision to put it on HBO Max has helped it stay in the public eye, not that it needed it. Wonder Woman 1984 was already one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. With the rest of 2020’s blockbusters vacating the release calendar for greener pastures, it is the last remaining event film.

Its status as the last remaining blockbuster hasn’t helped on the box office front – early numbers from international territories indicate a reluctance to see the film in theaters. Warner Bros. will have to make that up somehow, either through PVOD or HBO Max subscriptions. All eyes will be on the studio in the coming weeks to see just how the film fares, even if a sequel is practically all but guaranteed anyway. Gadot’s innovative promotion of Wonder Woman 1984 on Instagram is another reminder of the passion behind the project, and that is more valuable than any amount of money.
