Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Slice of life is a very popular genre of anime. Shows within its jurisdiction typically focus on small chunks of the daily lives of its characters. This doesn’t always mean that it is a grounded story as these shows can mix in other elements of fantasy and sci-fi to give themselves a unique flavor. In fact, there is such a huge variance in what counts as slice of life that it is hard to summarize what works in this category look like further beyond this rudimentary explanation.

And along with this range of content, there is also a range of quality with shows running the gamut from amazing to mediocre to not great — or even just outright bad. This list will run down the 10 worst anime shows ranked according to MyAnimeList.

10 Suzakinishi The Animation – 5.48

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Starting off the list is Suzakinishi The Animation, a TV series that like many others on this list runs on the short side, clocking in at just 3 minutes per episode. It is a television anime adaptation based on the Suzakinishi radio program and it originally aired on Tokyo MX TV, TV Kanazawa, and Sun TV.

The show itself follows the two very young leads as they go through somewhat inappropriately raunchy jokes while making space to feature the talents of voice actresses Aya Suzaki and Asuka Nishi. It’s not a great show and that’s why it belongs on this list.

9 Urawa no Usagi-chan – 5.41

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Next up is Urawa no Usagi-chan, an anime made mainly for the purpose of advertising Urawa City in Saitama, Japan. This is hardly surprising as Japan has something of a habit of using cute anime girls — these particular ones are in high school — to promote a variety of products, sometimes to great effect. After all, many popular shows have inspired people to visit the locations they were based on.

Unfortunately, this show is cliched and filled with slice of life tropes, with characters that are basically already fully defined by their appearances. The show also doesn’t share that much about Urawa, making it a failure on all fronts.

8 Alice Or Alice – 5.37

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Alice or Alice is a show that looks at the daily lives of a pair of twins both confusingly named Alice. The occurrences in the show focus on the mundane events of eating, hanging out with friends, and doing normal cute girl things. There’s also a weird older brother with a sister complex, a trope used often in anime and also one that never fails to be uncomfortable.

It is based on a manga series that has been around since 2013 and centers around the brother’s rather boring interactions with the mostly female cast, further backed up by a plain art style and one-dimensional characters.

7 Peeping Life – 5.33

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Peeping Life is not as pervy as its name may suggest. It is in fact meant to refer to peeping into the lives of people in Japanese society. It uses an all CGI art style and in its 10 episode span doesn’t do a whole lot besides trying to display Japanese people, their lives and their culture. Each episode starts in media res, making it a bit difficult to immediately figure out what’s going on.

It also goes out of its way to include all the nuances of how Japanese citizens speak. In the end, the scale of the show is small and focused on never more than two characters, keeping it simple and rather unengaging.

6 Akiba-chan – 5.32

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

The next show on this list is another rather stereotypical one, featuring again a cast of female characters. In Akiba-chan viewers are introduced to the titular Akiba-chan and her four fellow TV and game fans, all living in the Maison de Akiba apartments.

What makes this show stand out is the fact that the whole thing is acted out entirely with dolls and CG effects. The individual episodes have self-contained stories that are cute but shallow, with minimal character development and stiff animation to round out this not-so-satisfying treat.

5 Hakata Mentai! Pirikarako-Chan – 5.11

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Hakata Mentai! Pirirkarako-Chan looks like a show that is aimed at kids, with its cutesy talking character who has a grating overly positive voice and an adorable art style. The show is set in a mysterious shopping center and follows the fairy main character as she hangs out with other food fairies.

There isn’t much to mention in terms of plot or stakes in the show as there isn’t really any of that to speak of. Instead, watchers just follow Pirikarako-chan and her food-themed friends as they go on small adventures and participate in a bunch of fluffy light activities.

4 Room Mate – 4.84

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Room Mate is an alternative take on the One Room series, a show originally focused on a male/female-loving audience that told stories of the viewer’s relationship with the cast of girls on screen. Room Mate doesn’t change up this formula much outside of swapping around its cast for a bunch of hunky men.

This show is very clearly only for those who want to stare at male eye candy, as its story is nonexistent and instead focuses on a series of random events. Like many other entries on the list, the characters also fall into shallow tropes that leave the show feeling bland.

3 Ame-iro Cocoa – 4.75

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Ame-iro Cocoa and its various seasons show up multiple times in the lowest ranks of MyAnimeList, so rather than cover the same show multiple times, it has been placed by its lowest ranking entry, which also happens to be its first season.

It follows the main character Aoi Tokura, who often gets mistaken for a girl, and his life as he gets a job at a cafe where he meets the man who captivates him, Keiichi Iwase. The show follows Aoi and his interactions with the cast of the coffee shop and is so by the numbers that there is little to be gained from taking the time to watch it.

2 Love Kome: We Love Rice – 4.66

Worst Slice Of Life Anime Shows (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Like the previous entry on this list, Love Kome: We Love Rice and its various seasons show up a lot in the lower ranks of MyAnimeList, so it has just been ranked by its lowest-scoring season, which again happens to be its first. This bizarre show anthropomorphizes rice into a bunch of cool-looking schoolboys.

These characters inhabit the Kokuritsu Inaho Academy and the show follows their antics as they try to beat out the most popular grain, bread, to become the HarveStars of the Harvest Show. Despite how silly this concept is, the show plays out in a frustrating bog-standard way, earning it its place on this list.

1 Makura no Danshi – 4.63

And now for the number one lowest rated anime show on MyAnimeList, Makura no Danshi. The premise of the show is simple. Each episode starts with a different cute boy who purports to listen to the audience and hold them as needed. In practice, this means that the characters will talk to you about their lives and ask you questions as if they’re lying in bed with you, kind of like an adult version of Dora the Explorer.

The characters include types to cater to all tastes, like the mature working man, Sousuke Tanaka, and the punk with a heart, Eiji Kijinami. This show ends up being incredibly odd and uncomfortable to watch, ultimately accomplishing the feat of being the worst slice of life anime.
