Wrong Turn 7 Theory The Foundation Will Introduce A New Cannibal Family

While the Wrong Turn movie franchise has largely focused on the same cannibal family, it’s very possible the newest installment, Wrong Turn: The Foundation, will shift gears and introduce a new group of cannibals.

Returning to write the script for Wrong Turn 7 is original script writer Alan B. McElroy, and the project has been described as a reboot. Directing Wrong Turn 7 is Mike P. Nelson, who wrote and directed 2018’s The Domestics, which starred Kate Bosworth and Tyler Hoechlin. While plot details about Wrong Turn 7 have been kept largely under wraps, the movie’s subtitle—The Foundation—suggests there might be major changes being applied to the source material. The first Wrong Turn movie was the franchise’s only theatrical release in 2003. The five entries that followed were all released on VOD, although Wrong Turn 2: Dead End premiered at two film festivals, FrightFest Film Festival in London and Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.

The cannibal family, helmed by Three-Finger—the only surviving member of his clan—has been the central focus of every movie. The Wrong Turn movies are known for having inventive kills, graphic sexual content, and leaning heavily into classic slasher movie tropes that were popularized in the 1970s and 1980s. A fresh take would be good for the franchise, and has proven to be effective in recent years, as major horror franchises have been given updates that were quite successful with audiences in recent years.

Why Wrong Turn 7 Might Feature A New Cannibal Family

The Foundation suggests that there’s a group of cannibals rather than one specific family. While the connection could still be familial, it likely won’t be Three-Finger’s family. The synopsis of Wrong Turn 7 says that the unfortunate travelers end up crossing paths with The Foundation, who are described as “a community of people who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years”. The character names of the antagonists in Wrong Turn 7 also share a similar theme: Wild Boar Skull, Ram Skull, Deer Skull, and Wolf Skull. The original cannibals in Wrong Turn (2003) were Saw Tooth, Three Finger, and One Eye, names based on their physical attributes. The use of “skull” to describe the characters in The Foundation likely refers to some kind of communal hierarchy—perhaps they are the hunters, tasked with providing for their community by bringing them dead travelers to eat.

This is similar to the plot of the first movie, as the relationship between the three cannibals wasn’t expanded on until later. Wrong Turn 2 introduced other members of their family, and even brought a baby—Baby Three Toes—into the fold. Wrong Turn 4 served as a prequel to the series, and showed how the three brothers were temporarily institutionalized and explained more about their history, but how the genetic mutations they experienced caused them to have special advantages, such as a natural resistance to pain. It was also revealed, throughout the course of the franchise, that the familial line is furthered through inbreeding. Killing travelers who end up stranded and caught in various traps set by the cannibals is really just a means to an end so they can continue providing for themselves and their community—it’s not quite the same as other slashers, who hunt for pleasure or revenge.

If Wrong Turn 7 takes this element of a cannibalistic community and transforms it into a centuries-old society that has existed undetected in the Appalachian backcountry, it could further the lore for future installments in the franchise. Fans were surprised with the news of a new movie, as Wrong Turn 6 released in 2014; the fact that it is being reinvigorated after a six year gap could mean there are larger plans in the works.
