WWE 2K21 Is Definitely Cancelled After 2K20s Abysmal Entry

It looks like WWE 2K21 is cancelled after all, according to recent reports of a WWE earnings call. Last year’s entry in the annual wresting franchise, WWE 2k20, was filled with a number of bugs, glitches, and mechanical problems when it was released to the public in October 2019, and the game’s poor critical reviews and even poorer fan reception caused it to be labeled one of the worst titles of 2019.

Previously, it had been reported that the WWE 2K series would take a year off after the poor sales and response to WWE 2K20, but those reports remained unconfirmed by the publisher, 2K Games. The WWE has had a complicated relationship with video games recently, with a different publisher, Activision, currently being sued by WWE Hall of Famer Booker T after the company was accused of using his likeness in a Call of Duty game against the wrestler’s consent. Now, it looks like 2020 won’t be seeing a WWE video game at all.

Thanks to a recent report by IGN, players know for sure that the WWE is not planning on releasing a video game in 2020. This information comes from an earnings call in which WWE interim CFO Frank Riddick announced that “there’s not going to be a launch of a game this year” after being asked about the possibility of a new WWE 2k title during a question and answer session, confirming the previous reports published by Ringside News earlier this month about the WWE 2K series delaying this year’s entry.

Much like Ubisoft before them, it seems like the WWE has decided that they’d rather miss out on a year’s worth of game sales rather than release another product intensely despised by both fans and critics alike. After the poor reception of WWE 2K20, it’s no surprise that the people behind the game would want to take some time off to reassess the situation.

Especially considering most wrestling matches are currently being held without an audience right now, including the recently televised strange, silent Wrestlemania 36, everyone involved with the entire sport is likely hurting for money, stressed, and definitely not willing to relive the launch of a game like WWE 2K20 anytime soon. Many WWE fans have expressed an interest for the franchise to move back towards more arcade-like titles like the wrestling games on the PS2, and it will be interesting to see where current developer Visual Concepts takes the series once it finally decides to poke its head back out into public view. For now, everyone will just have to keep replaying WWE Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain again.
