WWE & Horror Movies Are A Perfect Match Heres Why

From John Carpenter’s 1988 film They Live to Shildwachter & Colangelo’s 2020 film Powerbomb, wrestlers and horror have been intertwined for nearly four decades. WWE Studios produces genre films each year from features directly starring their performers to other films that they help get off the ground, and WWE stars often enjoy starring and background roles in a variety of horror movies both produced by WWE Studios and not.

Now, the upcoming season 2 of Shudder’s The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs is bringing on Chris Jericho to co-host the premiere on April 24th. And, with Bray Wyatt’s mask being designed by Tom Savini and more wrestling performances being increasingly centered around horror, it’s safe to say that the relationship between horror and WWE is still as strong as ever.

Wrestling and horror have had a love affair for many years from WWE superstars with horror-themed gimmicks like the Boogeyman and the Undertaker to wrestlers showing up in horror films and horror stars showing up in wrestling matches. But, why is it that wrestling and horror seem to go together so well?

Why WWE & Horror Are A Perfect Match

For genre filmmakers, the chance to work with wrestling stars is a dream-come-true. Who better to play a terrifying monster who can perform their own stunts than someone who literally already does that every night of the week? Directors have been using the acting ability and stunt-capable training of WWE wrestlers for decades with films like See No Evil and See No Evil 2 starring WWE’s Kane, and Goldburg’s role as an evil version of Santa in Santa’s Slay (2005). In addition, WWE has gotten a lot out of this marriage as well through stunts like by bringing Chucky from Child’s Play on set at WCW to root for Scott Steiner on Monday Nitro.

Conversely, plenty of wrestlers come to WWE and other big-name wrestling companies with characters and gimmicks inspired by or even pulled directly from horror movies. Great examples include: Mick Foley’s deranged character Mankind, famous for wearing a leather mask reminiscent of a combo Leatherface and Hannibal Lecter and a sock puppet on his hand he called Mr. Socko; Finn Balor, who pulled his character from Irish mythology and his makeup from horror; and then, of course, the Undertaker, who is one of the most well-known wrestlers of all time and captivated audiences with his horror-themed character and supernatural elements to his act.

Finally, there’s the blood and realism aspect that horror shares with more hardcore wrestling companies and matches. The overt destruction of the body like those shown in special effects in the movies is also shared with wrestling, especially in the practice of ‘blading,’ a technique where a performer surreptitiously opens up a cut in their skin so that they bleed in the ring. That’s not the worst thing wrestlers put themselves through for the show. In ECW and hardcore matches, it became quite common for wrestlers to throw out bags of thumbtacks and hit each other with a variety of weapons in the interest of presenting as realistic and brutal of a match as possible.

At a fundamental level, wrestling and horror have a lot more in common than just the superstars who show up in genre films or those who pull their gimmicks from movies. At their core, horror and wrestling both aim to draw the audience into a shocking story through engaging writing, battles between good and evil, and a healthy dose of blood and violence. Perhaps this is why for so long horror and WWE have found a home together. They captivate audiences, scare them, shock them, and bring them back to reality after a satisfying catharsis, so it only makes sense to bring the two together.
