WWE Releases 9 Superstars Including Samoa Joe Billie Kay & Peyton Royce

WWE announces the release of several superstars, including Samoa Joe, Billie Kay, and Peyton Royce. Coming off a successful WrestleMania, with the emergence of new champions, viewers were looking forward to the coming year in WWE. But with this latest news, some are recalling the mass release which occurred last April.

Garnering criticism because it took place at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE released some major names from its roster last year. The list included Zack Ryder, Rusev, and EC3. Long-time performers were cut as well, among them Heath Slater and Primo Colón, in addition to referees and backstage personnel. Since then, a lot of those talents have revitalized their careers elsewhere. Now, on the heels of WrestleMania 37, fan favorites are once again abruptly being let go from the company.

WWE has announced that it has to come to terms on the release of Samoa Joe, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Mickie James, Chelsea Green, Tucker, Kalisto, Bo Dallas, Wesley Blake, and Mojo Rawley. According to wrestling journalist Sean Ross Sapp, the reason cited for these releases is budget cuts.

The releases vary in terms of how surprising they are. Some, such as Samoa Joe and Mickie James, were part of WrestleMania week. Billie Kay even competed in a match on the PPV. Others, like Wesley Blake and Tucker, were never given much attention by WWE’s writers and remained off of weekly episodes without storylines. Kalisto and Bo Dallas, meanwhile, are interesting cases. The latter hadn’t made an on-screen appearance in over a year, while Kalisto went through varying periods of being heavily featured and stretches where he was largely absent from the main storylines. Still, despite the fact that fans are sure to disagree about the validity of each individual case, it’s hard to argue that the released talent was well-served by WWE.

To use Billie Kay as an example, she was in a popular tag team with Peyton Royce until the writers broke up the team. Still, rather than floundering, both Kay and Royce have turned heads during the COVID-19 era of WWE for their performances. Tucker was less fortunate. After the team Heavy Machinery split up, the pair have struggled to achieve the same level of television time. And for all of his skill and experience, WWE couldn’t ever decide what it wanted from Kalisto. This news will be taken by some as a sign that, even though they’re quite capable of putting on an entertaining match card, many structural problems remain with how the company approaches its roster. Hopefully, the superstars released will embark on stronger and more fulfilling wrestling careers in other companies.
